Thrifty DIY Idea: Cheap and Easy Wall Art From Magazines

I'm on a purging/organizing kick. It's been exciting to streamline the household and make "stations" for each activity. The next necessary step was adding artwork, I can't thrive without it! Other than local art, my favorite thing to frame and display are pages from book and magazines.

I immediately swooped in on this issue of Hi Fructose at the flea market featuring one of my favorite artists, Junko Mizuno. Her weird, dark style is perfect for adding art to the kitchen, bedroom, and office area with their bright colors, intricate graphic design, and food and crafting themes- what's not to love?!

I start by...this is the heart breaking part...ripping the magazine in half at the seams right at the first page I want to take. This way I can rip out all the pages I want to use without fearing of damaging them.

Next I frame them in matching frames. It would fun to make a Junko gallery wall , but I need these pieces to add color throughout the house.

Three are now living in the kitchen. One by the new "blending station." I love the artichokes and bunnies in this piece, gorgeous!

The next two add color and life to the "tea station," I love the piece with the girl and the blender, so kitchen appropriate.

Next my office area got some love, I adore how the muted colors in the two Junko knitting pieces match my Cuttlefish anatomy poster.

Any finally two pieces are perfectly at home in my bedroom. I thought these were perfect to hang above the dresser with their feminine themes.

Ah, it's the little details that make a house a home. If there's any blank corners in your home that need warming up,  look to the thrifts for old magazines and books for art to fill the walls. I love displaying unconventional masterpieces and thrifted objects in my home.

What do you like to frame and/or display on the walls? It feels good to change things up for the new year. Look out for some home organization posts next week!

  1. Very cool! I have all kinds of framed art and photos. There are a lot of pretty/fun/cool note cards out there that can be framed for smaller pieces too. I think older ones are better!

    1. I love framing random old bits and antique or retro catalog pages. I'll be listed LOTS of vintage ephemera online for others to craft and hang in their homes this year.

  4. You sure have a fun style, Van! I just came across a couple of 1918 National Geographics and LOVE the old illustrations inside - real artwork in my mind. Also the fun old ads!!! I was thinking of making some framed pieces out of those. Thanks for the reminder. BTW, do you use thrifted frames? Silly question, of course you do :-)

    1. I have bought simple black ones from the dollar store in the past, but now use a big supply of frames that were donated to me, and thrift as necessary for certain sizes as need.

  6. I like to frame vintage advertisements from 1950s-60s magazines....the fonts, the graphics, the colors, the merchandise; everything about them are to die for!

  7. I'm ashamed to say that I have a collection of artwork that I purchased on Etsy that I have yet to put up on my walls. I am so not a decorator. I will need to ask a friend to help me out.

I happen to also sell old illustrated bookplates taken from worn, antique books, on eBay. A lot of these illustrations are considered original artwork (some are actual lithographs), and people buy them to display in their homes.

    1. I'll have to look up "book plates." Never heard of that. I have hundreds of antique and retro book pages to scan/frame/list/display for people to bring home. I love them!

  8. Well, I love your decorating idea...but I must also say that I'm love with your use of "stations" - such a clever way to get yourself organized and use your stuff in your daily routines!! The blending station and the tea station are kick butt!!! When did you purchase your Vitamix? I have wanted one for years, but have not written the check yet. We have an awesome blender, actually it's a knock-off Vitamix, so right now I don't see the need, but one day I will just do it! Do you buy it new or did you find it on the trail?

    1. I'll be showcasing more stations and organization next week, I've been enjoying having frequently-used things on display and easy to find! And adding art encourages me to keep it clean. The Vitamix was a birthday/christmas gift from my parents that I'm highly grateful for! I'll be writing detailed reviews of it soon, an essential for raw eating. I use it three times+ each day!
