A Secret Hippie Hideaway: An Earthy Home Tour Full of Thrifted Treasure

I was invited to peruse a clandestine community of artists and earthy new-agers. This small cluster of houses is carved out of section of undisturbed forest. Come with me on a journey away from civilization. It's off a main road but it feels like you're stepping into another world:

Can I move in now? It's like a hobbit house with tropical flair. It's a dream!

The smattering of houses have unique architectural features. There are round windows, natural stones, found art, and other eclectic artsy details incorporated into the interiors and exteriors that you don't see many  homes.

The same creative flair is found in spots all over the property. The round stones above are actually naturally occurring cocina deposits that hardened around thick tree trunks.

The residents grow food and have pot lucks around a communal fire pit. I hope I'll get invited to any upcoming craft nights. They enjoy the company of roaming hens, retired egg layers content to forage for tasty bugs on the healthy forest floor.

Let's intrusively peek at the interior of one of these charming homes. When you first enter the space is huge and very comfortable, with a beautiful fireplace, big open windows with a gorgeous view of the woods beyond, and stunning stone floors.

I love this library to the right when you first walk in. The exposed beams, stone flooring, wood and stucco walls make me homesick for the homes I'd see in Naples, Italy. The houses in this community have a European feel with organic elements like round arches and exposed brickwork.

Some of the electronics and many of the collected housewares are from the 1960s and 1970s.

The decor has a mix of thrifted finds, found art, collected art from friends, and eclectic world treasures.

Many of the pieces strewn about were crafted by the home owner. Here you see a view into the lush garden right outside the front door.

I love how open the space is, but the stone and wood details make it instantly cozy like a lodge.

And I just noticed there isn't a TV in the living room, making it a perfect spot to sit, read, and really interact with guests. Now I'm a missing my no TV days. We were less zombified at my apartment in those days!

I love the Moroccan style lamp hung in the kitchen and the windows looking into the greenery behind. It's a true cabin in the woods.

The lamp you see pictured on the desk turns on and off when you cradle the receiver on the hook! Glorious piece.

And one of my favorite second-hand scores in the casa, this glorious mid century modern lamp!

It's nestled inside of the cozy computer room/crafting space. I'm also loving the animal skulls on the red crossed box.

Here's a closed look into the wunderkammer-like nook of curiosities to get the creative juices flowing.

I love the exposed beams above the dining nook and the rounded doorway to the left!

The left photo has the kind of art clutter a creative loves to drink in and the right is the side of the kitchen with a fun chalkboard fridge!

The dining nook also features a beautiful mid century modern dining set, china cabinet, and fun art made by the homeowner's friends.

I left inspired to hunt down as many unique homes and folk art destinations as possible! Can't wait to share more with you. This neighborhood is a relaxing getaway. Keep exploring. You never know what's in your own back yard. Don't neglect to e-mail me if you want me to explore your home for this series! I want to collaborate on home before/afters, too.

What's your favorite element of this cozy forest? Let's discuss! By the way, the homeowner asked to keep this sanctuary anonymous. If you happen to recognize, please don't identify it in the comments.

  1. That first exterior shot reminds me of a little house in my city. It's very mid-century in design, but it's an odd duck for its neighborhood and in desperate need of TLC. I have a secret dream of being able to snatch it up for a song one day, and transforming it into my own little mid-century/retro piece of heaven.

    1. I'm always dreaming of snatching up the odd fixer-uppers in my area and turning them into beauties. I think us thrifter-brains have an eye for it and dreaming up the possibilities. Have many more posts coming with photos of my various dream houses ;) Maybe I'll do a follow-up with photos of the exteriors of all these houses if I'm allowed, they're all so beautiful.

    1. But of course! :D Sorry if I made it seem like a hippie commune or Amish community but this a thoroughly modern community.

    1. No prob :) I feel like too many house tours on blogs and mags are too meticulously staged, I like to see a nice lived-in cozy space, too. Some reality!

  7. I am also bored by the staged look of homes you see on blogs these days. I really love seeing reality in all it's beauty. That rock outside is to die for. I love the mobile outside the window also. The stone floor and stucco walls are just wonderful.

  10. I truly enjoyed this unique oasis... Am actually drooling over the decor. Artistic, highly original, with pretentious look at me objects.

  12. I've always loved the stone and wood look. I keep telling my husband that even though we're in the sierra foothills already we're going to move into a cabin someday and enjoy more of the mountain life. Maybe once the kids are older. Don't you just love how you could have so much of everything that one would think it's a lot but it's displayed and arranged so well that it's completely something else. This place really tells a story with all of it's treasures.

  13. Great in sequence! There is something wonderful about "A Secret Hippie Hideaway: An Earthy Home Tour Full of Thrifted Treasure". I am fearful by the excellence of information on this website.
I think, Windows are a major part of the home, one which not only determines the look of the house but also gives it a special identity.
I am sure I will visit this place another time soon, to know about window setting.
