Thrift Haul: Enjoying Low Prices at the Goodwill Pound Store

I love shopping at the Goodwill pound store, the total is always less than I think it will be no matter how much seemingly heavy junk I stack on the counter to be weighed. If you haven't been to a Goodwill pound store yet, you should investigate via Google to see if they have one in your area. Goodwill pound store weigh items and charge you by the pound, and different prices per pound are assigned to different categories (like books, housewares, purses, clothing, etc.) The result, items cost pennies instead of dollars! With Thrift Store prices sneakily rising, I find myself gravitating to curbsides, yard sales, and estate sales more and more.

What do you do to save money while thrifting and hunting? Where do you hunt?

Everything pictured is for sale if you're interested! Drop me a line.

  1. Hmmmmm. Don't think we have any "pound" stores here yet. I haven't shopped GoodWill or S.A. due to high pricing. I find church rummage sales, the free boxes as garage sales and curb-sides to be my best hunting grounds :)

    2. Oooh Van!! You MUST make church rummages your priority!! I make a beeline to them all the time and find some of my best stuff there, usually cheaper than yard sales, too!! There's a church near us that holds a twice-a-year sale, I look forward to it! They just had their 2nd one last weekend and did not disappoint! The back of my truck was full and my total was only $23.10!!

  2. I have a kind of Goodwill pound store near me,but it's not like yours. It's called Bargain Barn and it's in the same building with the regular Goodwill store(separate area with its own entrance). The only thing they charge by the pound is fabric, sheets,& clothes at $1.45 a pound.Everything else is a per item price.I love going there-I was there yesterday and picked up a few things including a cashmere sweater. It has a couple of holes, but I can still use it to make something else(I'm thinking maybe a heating pad cover or a pillow).
I'm loving that Simpsons sheet. It would be awesome made into a reuseable shopping bag, apron,or something. That reminds me-I have a Goosebumps sheet that I want to use to make trick or treat bags for the kids.
As always, great stuff. It just confirms that I'd be broke if I lived near you, lol.

    1. Yuko has claimed the Simpsons sheet, she immediately set up camp on it. I thought I might try it on eBay, but the owl shirt will definitely become a small throw pillow. I love using inexpensive thrifted fabric/sheets/shirts to make new pieces, too :D

  3. I love the pound store here, but word has gotten out like a mofo and I don't find as good of stuff as I did a few years ago. After much trial and error (and talking to regulars/workers) I have come up with a formula for shopping there at the least busy times so there's less competition. But, I do still go in at other times and brave the bargain hungry hordes. ;)

I also have "secret" thrifts that I go to within the greater Nashville area. Because of my husband's business we drive all over hell's half acre several times a week so we know where all the thrifts/antique stores are in a 100 mile radius. Some aren't even listed online, and we have just found them by driving by. Those are the best. We geotag them with our gps. I also make a point to know regular sale days at local thrifts. One thrift here has a college day every week where stuff is 50% off. I still take classes online for further education now and then, so I have a college i.d. I'm friendly with the staff at the thrifts I am a regular at, and that goes a long way. Sometimes they tell me about secret sales before hand. That's not why I'm nice, I genuinely enjoy talking to people and being friendly, so it's just an added bonus that they tell me thrift secrets.

I sometimes find good stuff at estate sales, but I'm a night owl, not an early bird, so I always miss out on stuff at them. Plus they are soooo competitive. I love yard sales, but again there's that early morning thing about them. Rummage sales are good but I don't really know how to find out when church's are having them...

    1. Hoards is right, people take their junk hunting way too seriously in the pound store a lot of the time. I've also found some of the best thrift stores just from my days of driving around aimlessly.

  4. We had a pound store in Dayton, OH and I loved it. It was a last chance store...all items not purchased after a few days was burned or buried. Often they would get not only the old stuff from other stores but new stuff the other stores couldn't absorb. It was a terrific place to shop! I haven't found one here in FL yet. (sigh)

  5. OK, just discovered you can look them up by state. There is one in St Pete and West Palm Beach (where we are going for a week in Nov). Be still my heart!

    1. Oh, I'll have to look that up if I'm in the area! Have fun hunting. I'm fascinated by the concept of a "last chance" store.

  6. No pound stores here in Australia, I'd love it if there was though. I must say though a church rummage is great for saving on some dollars for sure.

  8. We used to have a Goodwill By The Pound right smack in the middle of downtown - in crackton area. I remember having a guy I was dating drive me around at like midnight on a Sunday trying to find it to go shopping. Why did I think it would be open? He must have thought I was a weirdo. Anyways, it had already closed down by then & moved just outside of the city (I just found this out a couple mins ago) & another Goodwill store opened a short distance away.. which we ended up finding.

  9. Your Simpsons sheets are so great! We are total Simpson fanboys. I just try to make sure I get to the thrift store fairly often so that I can catch the half off tags more often. I've never heard of a pound store. I'll have to look that up.

  10. They really can be hit or miss, even if you get there right when it opens. I walk out empty-handed often. Those pics! That is one sad, messy Goodwill! Never seen one that bad!

  11. We have one here in Memphis. I love it! Although, you need to wear gloves to protect your hands (have encountered broken glass, etc) to dig in the bins. It is NOT for the faint of heart, tho. When it's crowded, shopping here is a bloodsport. lol When they roll out a new bin it's every woman, and man, for themselves!

    Nice haul!
