A Groovy Waltz Through the Woods: Remembering What Matters

I used to spend hours exploring "the woods" with my friends when I first moved to Florida. We caught dozens of tadpoles, catfish,  lighting-fast emerald-like anole lizards with long flicking tails, sticky green tree frogs, and lumpy brown toads. My favorite animal discoveries were the jewel hued skinks, elegant, ebony lizards with luminous scales and electric blue tails. You had to be lucky to catch them darting beneath decaying leaves were they felt safe.

I know I've "grown up" when I'm content to just be there in nature with the same creatures rather than going out of my way to disturb them. Then again, I just don't see them even on the rare occasion I make it back out to the "woods" I love. The North Florida biodiversity just isn't what it used to be in the late 90s. Regardless, getting back to nature is a special source for creativity and inspiration.

It reminds me that all the hours I spend here on the internet making dat buck, writing away, and selling away, through pleasurable times and stressful times, is for one thing. I do it all because I want MORE time to spend out there: in the woods, at the beach, in the water, exploring urban and natural scenes, just exploring! Being in nature, experiencing this planet and its art and culture is what I live for. And working for myself gives me the flexible schedule to get into whenever I want to.

What inspires you when you're in a rut with work? Your family/kid, walks, pets, dinosaurs, murder?  (Ha, just making sure you're paying attention.)

  1. I too, grew up in the woods exploring trails and catching little critters. (snakes and snails were my favourite) I miss my old home, we lived really close to a woods with trails for a long time and I would go all year round whenever I needed to think or be alone or just to get fresh air. Even in the winter time. Those were some good times.

    1. They were indeed good times. I'm making a point to walk all the trails in town, it's so sad that I've only walked a couple after living here over a decade.

    2. I've become more of a homebody inadvertently, working from home and all, scheduling time to go out and explore more. Now's a good time in Florida, before it gets crazy hot outside!

  2. Very nice pictures! Getting out in the "real" world is a great cure for being in a rut.

    1. Indeed! I can't wait to schedule (haha) more time to get into it. I want to explore everything I haven't seen in the city and then expand to nearby places from there. Florida has so much to see!

  4. Such lovely photos! I try to draw inspiration from as many sources as possible. From books and magazines to friends and family (my sister can make any outfit work, seriously). I'd love to take a time out to enjoy some natural inspiration. Of course we have parks and trails I'd love to explore. But once the weather here in Philly stays consistently warm I'll be taking the camera downtown for some architectural inspiration too!

    1. Thank you, there was much beauty to display that day, had to hold back and just share a few instead of the dozens of photos I took. Philly had so much to explore, I was in awe! I can't wait to visit again...when it warms up. Can't handle the cold!

  5. I take walks by the ocean - my favorite thing. If too windy or cold we switch to the forest. It is so calming.

    1. I can't wait to get out to the beaches soon, so many to explore down here that I haven't even been to yet!

  6. Growing up, there was a "hunting" trail behind my house, that hunters used to go deeper into the woods, closer to the swamp, for hunting purposes. I used to walk and ride my bike down that trail quite often. Its probably a wonder I never got shot!

I remember once riding around a curve on my bike, and I encountered a cute site. A turtle and a deer had met in the center of the path. The deer was leaning down, and the turtle had its head streched WAY up, and they were touching noses.

Of course, the deer took off immediately, but its a memory I'll have forever.

As for work ruts....I work a retail job. I'm pretty sure it WOULD take murder to break that work rut.

    1. Aw, the turtle and deer scene! I paid my dues to the retail gods and was bored to tears working it for years. I feel your pain. Murder, indeed!

  7. I totally disagree. I was in Florida not too long ago, and not in the 90s, and I saw all those things and way more...armadillos, tortoises, turtles, alligators, LOTS of birds, and even a wild cat! It's definitely still out there.

  8. Thanks for sharing. I have to admit, I'm not much of an outdoor type person. I'm more of a homebody and love to putter around the house, baking, cooking, and creating. One of my favorite ways to get out of a rut with work is doing something creative - baking, crafting, or making up funny stories with my stuffies.
