Ugly Junk: A New Retro/Antique Store After my Ecclectic Junk-Loving Heart

I was driving usual route to thrift and dollar stores along Blanding Boulevard when I saw a small Thrift Store I frequented had changed ownership. It was now Ugly Junk and the typography of the sign and well balanced placement of retro lamps hung in the window stood out. It's baudy yet classy, brilliantly trashy.

Any typogrpahy-geek, or individual with two working eyes, can see their logo (above, left) is just brilliant. Beautiful I say! I had to stop inside where the owners kindly let me take as many photos as I desired with my camera phone.  Love this information on the front, outfitting a Friday's or Ruby Tuesdays with loads of retro scores with character is a dream job for some sellers.

I wouldn't mind a full-time job outfitting Man Caves with groovy, nerdy vintage. Let's call them Van Caves. There is definitely a Man Cave/Bat Cave of my own for all creative exploits in my future.

This shop is pricey and out of my range as a reseller or collector and could use more cleaning, but I loved exploring all the goods anyway.

I enjoyed how a lot of the collections were grouped by type, nice touch that I need to carry over to my antique mall spaces.

This group of jars, to die for I tell you. I believe I overheard the owner say he bought a lot of these items on auction with Ruby Tuesdays restaurants closed down.

The Ruby Tuesdays theory would explain the beautiful lamps hanging in front of the windows, Tiffany-styles of many patterns grouped into a glorious collection.

I loved many of the mod lamps and shades like the groovy mushroom and white number behind the table but many were a bit damaged and out of my budget.

And there was a beautiful couple of shelves filled with vintage packaging to pause. Old package design, they knew how to do it right!

I'd recommend a tour through Ugly Junk if you're a local collector or even reseller. You may find that special vintage item you've been seeking your whole life, waiting to go home with you.

Would you love a job selling antiques and retro goodies to movie sets, man caves, and sports bars? I would! Though my brain's imploding at the thought of keeping so much merchandise around!

  1. So cool! I love going to restaurants/bars/heck, even Cracker Barrel and admiring all the funky, old stuff that is used to decorate.

  2. If I ever win the lotto my plan is to get a warehouse and possibly go all hoarder nuts in it! I would be organized OCD style about it, but it would be full! If I had that, then I would totally sell to restaurants and the like. It would be fun!

    1. I have had this dream. Oh, have I had it :) My version of the warehouse has a workshop for me and art friends and a cafe the serves health food/tea/herbs/good coffee. Ah, to dream...

My friends and I do always look at warehouse rent prices but they're up there.

  6. Great store!! Don't we all have the huge store/creative space dream?? Love the grouping. Been trying to do more focused group displays in my booth.

  7. Nice typography means nothing if there's typos involved. It is not ECT., peoples, it is etc.

Sorry, nit-picky proofreader in me. I'll go read the rest of the post now. Couldn't get past the first part without saying something. :)

  9. What a cool place to check out. I like those owl and train jars.
I'd love a job doing fit outs but I do have plans and hopes for the feature to be able hire some of my stock out for photoshoots, displays, weddings, movie sets and commercials.

It's in my business plan to work on the approach to start with weddings, whilst I have some down time when I have bubs in August. Mind you we will see how successful I am at achieving that with three kids at the age of four and under lol.

    1. There are two vintage shops nearby that rent out clothes, one is run by a stylist who rents her vintage duds and another has furniture she rents for events. (I wrote about her shop, "Viva La Thrifty") There's a lot you can do with the vintage biz, there will always be a market for it.

    2. Touché. I'm hearing so many people gripe at the moment about it being hard to find treasures and for go prices. But as I keep saying to them keep thinking like that and you'll miss other opportunities or ideas because your blinkers will be on.

    3. Yep, you have to in the right mindset to thrift. Should write a book on that, "The ZEN of Thrifting" :D

    1. There's a pro picker niche for it. It's one reason why I'd always buy big quirky signs when encountered.

  12. What a gorgeous store!

Ugh I wish we had such good finds where I live, but I'm moving to NY for the summer so maybe I'll have more luck!

  14. That looks like such a cool place! I'm from Jacksonille, and usually had decent luck with thrift finds.

  15. I love how they just come right out and describe their stuff as "Ugly Junk." And their signage saying that they decorate man caves and restaurants really places them in a unique niche. You know what they're selling, no question!

    1. Yep! I like "Ugly Junk" because that's how a LOT of people feel about mid century modern or groovy 70s "tacky" wares, I've heard people tell me I sell "Ugly Junk" all the time. Doesn't bother me, I embrace my tacky just like the owners of this shop.
