Thrift Haul: A Playful Haul of Mod, Comics, and Much More!

With my strict organization goals in place I nearly skipped the flea market this week. I'm glad I didn't, I came home with a glorious haul of all of my favorite types of finds: playful, colorful, and eclectic!

Ah, so many shapes, colors, and textures to admire! I can't wait to get these finds tagged-up and loaded into my antique store booths for their rehaul. But remember, everything pictured is for sale if you want it. Just send me an e-mail. :)

I love vintage picnic baskets and was glad to get this huge, sturdy one for a good price. I do believe I'll be giving this one the chalkboard picnic basket treatment.

Kitsch explosion! Who could resist this thick wooden deer clock with a playful googly eye? Not I!

My collection of vintage kitschy trivets is quite large by now...but I can't stop picking them up, they're so fun.

I'm sure someone will scoop up this playful cassette tape purse quickly. It's in fresh never-been-used condition. Paired here with fun sunnies I found at the flea.

I admit this "Chow Kit" was silly, but I ended up purchasing it for the cool packaging. Damn you, tempting vintage packaging.

I was happy to find Siestaware and what appears to be real Dorothy Thorpe glasses in good shape this time around as well!

These cute tiny pitchers were made in Japan. I love the rustic beer barrel and white coffee bag on the front. The sticker underneath proclaims they are a "Del Coronado Nasco Product."

Another robot! I want to rebrand my antique store booths in a colorful toy-and-comic-book filled style that suits my style better, so this one may end up being sold. If I can let him go!

Mr. Robot posing with some beautiful Rook comics from the 1980s! I all of the primary colors on the covers.

Next we have a couple of 80s era TV eating trays. I honestly don't know what MASK is, I haven't bothered to look it up yet...but I loved the bold composition and colors at work here!

I like how the tin allows oxyidation to show through. People eat up rustic finds like these in antique store; rust tells a story. Also, confession time, I never like the Smurfs. I prefer my Transformers!

Ha! What was I thinking? It was only fifty cents but the photos of deformities within will give you nightmares! But mission accomplished, I learned interesting new things about an anatomy educators are too prudish to discuss in schools.

I have this theory that Squirrels are the new owl! Here's three of my favorite things: kitchen junk, cute woodland critters and scotch print.

A beautiful unicorn lamp and vintage Japanese girl. I love her blue and white kimono and the way her obi matches her red bow!

And we're wrapping things up with an adorable vintage chipmunk wall hanging.

And Yuko finally shows her face to demonstrate scale for us. Thank you, Yuko. People have asked where's she's been lately...

These days she's perching on high things and sleeping a lot. But I'll be putting her to work to earn her kibble soon enough!

I must thank the kind people who buy from these thrift haul posts yet again. I love carefully packaging up your vintage bits and sending your drawing and surprises in every box! If you like anything you see in haul posts, simply e-mail me.

  1. MASK was awesome! It had cars that transformed into alternate modes. It was like a cross between Transformers and G.I. Joe. I know a TON of people online who'd want that. Nice find!

  3. Great stuff! I love the deer with the googly eye. I also like the hand-drawn notes that you put in your boxes. :)

    1. I hope the recipients love them, too. Sometimes I want to upgrade to higher tech packaging methods but the hand-drawn notes are so personable.

  4. I get such a rush every time I spot good condition Dorothy Thorpe. I think I'm obsessed. It really amazes me how some vintage glassware has survived 50- 60 years through moves, and yard sales and thrift stores and storage units...and then I'm the one who usually chips or breaks it. :/

    1. Meeee too. I'm actually plotting a "safe them from me!" sale for my personal use vintage dishes. I keep breaking them...and breaking my heart ;P

  5. I am backing up your squirrels as the new owl theory, but I don't want anyone to know! Shhhhh.

BTW - really loving the squirrel planter you sent my way. Even cuter than I thought it would be.

  6. Great haul Van! We have literally found some similar items this last week. One of our local thrift stores has 4 long boxes of almost new comics for 35 cents each. My huz and I have made 2 separate trips and got a massive haul of comic books. He's a HUGE comic fan (we have like 10 long boxes of them already from over the years and that's not including his childhood collection at his mom's) so he's in heaven. I read them too just not as voraciously as he does. Also, I JUST found yesterday a small collection of Dorothy Thorpe silver band glasses. I had found 4 of the roly polies awhile back. 2 of the new ones I found are exactly like yours, and doing some research I think they are the highballs? Do you know? Also 1 of mine seems like an old fashioned but not entirely sure, and the other has a pour spout like a creamer but is the same size as the old fashioned. Weird. If you know more about them I'd love to hear it. :)

    1. At only 9 inches tall total these seem a little short to be the highballs. I'll reply here if I find more info on them. I'm so jealous of the amazing deal you guys got on the comic book haul!

  7. Nice finds! I was wondering if you have luck reselling slide projectors? We have several cool projectors (slide and film) but so far havent had much luck selling in our booth and they are SO heavy to ship.

Great photos as always...thanks for sharing.

    1. The one pictured is my first one, we'll see what I can sell it for. I'm going to try on Craigslist since it's so heavy! Then in the shop if I can squeeze it in. I know some photography teachers still use them.

There's a big demand for overhead projectors as artists use them. I still have mine around and finally need to let it go and sell it ;)

  11. Van you were in and out so fast we didn't get to chat long today....maybe next time. I had an awesome Saturday morning!! I hit a few sales, including a church in my area, but unfortunately I was too early...why do people want to wait until 8:00? Anyways, on my 3rd stop I hit the jackpot!! A clean out of Grandma and Grandpa's shed yielded me some glorious and cheap treasures!!! Let's just say I filled the back of my truck up for less than $20!!! Luggage, chalk boards, tool boxes, a red metal chair, jewelry, playing cards, old board games and more!! I was one happy camper by 9:00 a.m.!!!

    1. Score! I need to hit up more sales like that but I'm pretty damn stocked up at the moment ;) Sorry I was in-and-out before I could say bye, so much to do! I really appreciate your booth suggestions, I'll keep working on it...

  12. Let me know how that works out for you. I'm trying to do the same, fill it with lots of "smalls", revitalize, and rebrand!

I'm also trying to add small furniture bits to the front of the store because those typically sell fast. Does your store let you do that? It helped me sales last month!
