Thrift Haul: Playing With Smalls, A Tiny Bathroom and Kitchen Addiction

I'll never grow up, I'm an eternal toy-lover. This weekend I found several sets of smalls. I paid more for these Tomy Made in Japan sets than I normally would, but I promised myself that I'd snatch them up again if I found them at an okay price. It's been fun staging them ever since:

I love the detail, this toilet lid opens and the toilet paper dispenser spins like the real thing, the faucets swivel, the drawers and cabinets open, and the basins are complete with detailed drains.

I love how the mirrors of this vanity open to reveal storage shelves you could likely line with various tiny depictions of mouthwash, toothpaste and bathroom potions.

But no bathroom is complete without a dinosaur! Ah, he just sets the scene perfectly.

And this mod kitchen set, too beautiful. Love the yellow cabinet and how you can see the planks of wood making the counter tops. The dishwasher opens to reveal a top rack for stocking dishes. But you know what this kitchen needs?!

GOD DAMN DINOSAURS, that's what! BAM! Your wish my command! It could use the missing drawer too but I always wasted my wish on the dinosaur. The beauty of the pieces hypnotized me into buying them despite three missing spots. The chair on the left looks dino chomped if you look hard enough.

And we also need a place to sit, take out a chair. Don't mind the dinosaur behind you.

The mini kitchen is chilling in my kitchen.

The bathroom is right at home in the bathroom, but of course.

Meanwhile, my roomie and I staged a relaxing scene with pirates and booze! I'm always looking out for minis to stage dioramas, take photos, and use in product photography. They're glorious for the designer's soul to behold and fine display in any home that lacks children like mine, no shame! It's been done before but I want to put my spin on a whole new toy-photo-art series too, and just challenge myself with what can be creatively portrayed with toys as a medium. Forgive today's indulgent toy haul, rest assured there's a smorgasbord of vintage to behold next week!

Giveaway Alert! I'm hosting an awesome giveaway below, please check it out and give it some love! You can win a free vintage set. And of course, everything in today's post is for sale. Send me an e-mail if you'd like to buy something you see.

  1. I still have that kitchen set from my dollhouse when I was little! I don't have the solid set of cabinets, but I've got the sink piece and a stove piece with a vent hood over it, and a matching fridge. Sadly, mine is missing a couple drawers, too! And now I'm rethinking letting my son play with it... I'm loving that bathroom set!

    1. Aw, glad this bought back happy memories for you. I'm thinking of rescuing my abandoned Barbie house from my parent's place for creative projects. All of it's intact over there! My roomie and I will never grow up, we love playing with them and admiring the small pieces with awe.

  2. Love those miniatures! Cool score! We have a bunch of toys around here like you and sometimes we have fun staging them and taking photos too. We actually *play* with our vintage Fisher Price sets. Imagine the little people's surprise when a t-rex or giant robot comes crashing through the village. haha ;)

  3. OH MY GOD THE TINY FURNITURE. I love it! I love it! You need a tiny TOMY figure of Michael Caine as he looked in "Hannah and Her Sisters" to walk around these FABULOUS late 70's/early 80's tiny interiors! I die!

  4. Oh those doll house minis are just so much fun. I've had my eye out for some in my treasure hunting, but nice complete sets are hard to come by that don't cost a mint. I so want to play with your set now though :(

No major finds this past week, these last few weeks have got me struggling to get around with my pregnancy, so I've been staying close to home and taking it easy and working on my Etsy store. But I did have a roadside find the other day of an old girls bedroom dresser, so I promptly instructed hubby to drive back up the hill and put it in our boot. Needs a repaint but hey I'm not complaining a week of no finds and they just present themselves and for free, I'll take it thank you very much.

  6. Hahaha! Fun post! I saw some great mid century miniatures at a show this summer that I would have totally bought had they been priced better. They have been added to the want list now.
Love the dinosaur! For some reason I want to see him on the toilet! It's been a weird day... :)

    1. Oh, that's not a bad idea. Your not strange, when I spied the toilet that was my first thought, "This presents some fun photographic opportunities...!"

  8. Van, this is such an adorable and fun post. I always get a kick out of seeing your dinosaur or robot in the pics. Vanna White may not have a job anymore. Ha Ha. :) We found some vintage Fisher Price wooden people last week and a Barbie Camper Van which brought back some great childhood memories.

  10. The mini kitchen set rocks! It's nearly the size of my old condos kitchen. The bathroom though, that's pretty much to scale.

    1. Haha, I've dealt with microscopic kitchens and bathrooms, too. I'm still used to no counter space now that I have it and do most tasks on one counter and on top of the sink with a cutting board!

  11. Those Tomy pieces are awesome, Van. I love staging smalls too. Maybe tomorrow I'll try to hunt down some more smalls to pose with my Blythe doll. She's tons of fun to photograph.

  12. very cool finds. I have an slightly unhealthy obsession with miniatures, THEY'RE JUST SO CUTE! I love those vintage doll house sets, they're so cool. The pirate set is awesome too. I used to play with those little people when I was a kid, I even have a doll house for them. My little people never had such cool parties though.

  14. I love your dollhouse furniture. They are gorgeous! You might be able to get a lot for those pieces, esp given the quality. Many sellers (like myself) sell these pieces individually on eBay. Good luck with yours :0)
