14 Before 2014: An End of the Year Business and Home Goal List. Theme: Curate!

2013 is already drawing to a close! Isn't it odd to think of the years passing and the dreams we had when we were younger? When I first started college at 17 in 2004, 2010 seemed like a distant Jetsons-flying-car future year where I'd have already graduated with a graphic design degree. I thought I'd be a full time office working professional,  but I drew a complete blank on what that "work" would be and what my "life" would be. I was completely lost. Everything felt uncertain. 10 years later I have a mission and feel so fulfilled working on exactly what I want to every single day. I'm excited to take it to the next level in 2014! I'll further curate my life, goals, brand, everything!

My Life's (and Thrift Core's) Mission: To Inspire others to live a happy, healthy, creative, and meaningful life outside the status quo and to curate unique and inspiring items and artwork.

I always love to end the year by accomplishing a specific list of action steps so I start my next year's mission with a fresh slate. Here are my 14 Before 2014 goals. I'd love if you shared your own in the comments! The trick is to make them small, very doable steps. We're already busy enough during the holiday season without having to tackle huge projects.

1) Go through house with a trash bag and a "donation" box and deep purge. No Regrets. No Mercy.
2) Dust and clean the house from top to bottom, from the ceiling to the floor boards.
3) Sweep, mop, and scrub every floor in the house thoroughly. Then make this a no-shoe apartment!
4) Clear off every apartment counter, clean it, then replace collections thoughtfully.
5) Create my "thrifty photography station" (Post on that coming.)
6)  List All Excess Apartment Furniture, Lamps, and Vintage Artwork Collection on Craigslist.
7) Put the vanity in my bedroom together. The mirror is tucked behind it improperly. Drives me nuts.
8) Finish hanging my art collections according to the art gallery hanging rule.
9) Finalize my merchandise storage plan and implement it! Even if I have to buy it!
10) Curate and purge my wardrobe. (Creative post on this upcoming, too.)
11) Designate a place for every work supply and have it documented in a spreadsheet.
12) Have all of my income/expenses added up, filed away, and ready for taxes. (Post soon!)
13) Finish writing my "Apartment Challenge", "Thrifty 2014 Challenge" & "Big Dreams" posts.
14) Go see and document the beautiful Christmas Lights in St. Augustine. Window shop for inspiration and eat at my favorite raw vegan cafe (Present Moment) while I'm at it. A complete day off, lawd knows I need one!

Bonus: Finish reading and taking notes on Handmade Success! & Finish Editorial Calendar for 2014.

Some More Big and Small Goals for 2014: Make a light-up antique mall booth sign, make better linking buttons for Thrift Core, new Thrift Core streamlined blog design, create a line of planners, create indie business help and reselling help eBooks, create a new line of vintage illustrations, finish my vintage illustration/ephemera line.

I'm looking forward to pushing the envelope with journalism on Thrift Core, finding rad new creative spaces to share and urging others to reach their full potential in health, in their homes, and creatively. I want to work with creators, share off their spaces and processes and make this a space of learning and inspiration. Every day is an opportunity to improve, I love my job :) ! Even when it forces me to trash my house and then make an exhaustive list to get it back to it's former glory, haha.

What are your big goals before 2013 ends? Any big goals for 2014? Do share, it helps keep us accountable!

  1. I think I'll just print off your goal list and use it myself, since I need to do the same things. This way I won't have to think about it. Just run with it...Thrift Core goal list.

    1. Doooo it :D ! I think it's something we all need to do in our homes as dust settles into every crevice throughout the year. Especially if you're a reseller bringing in new dusty bits all the time!

  2. You are one ambitious person! I have always been told to make a list, and then start by tackling the worst/hardest/most complicated thing FIRST. Get it out of the way. The more complicated things are the things we tend to procrastinate the most on. I always read to tackle a list from worst to easiest and that is the best way to complete the list. OR be like me, and don't make any lists, haha. Actually my list includes to get even more active with social media. I plan to get my shop(s) a Facebook page in the next few months and get my shops stocked more. I am looking forward to your blog about "thrifty photo station"!

    1. I'm about to head out to hunt for the supplies for the photo station :D ! I've tried making ones I can easily pack up but I now know I need one up at ALL TIMES or it hurts the work flow. I've often read the tackling-the-hard-parts-first tip, I've tried it and it works. But it is HARD to muster up the will power to actually do it. As you see here I'm doing the fun thing first, supply shopping. haha ;p

  6. Ha...Goals BEFORE 2014? Uh, spend time with friends and family is my only one...but then again we are away from home, the shop is on vacation hold and it is christmas time. But have to say...did go thrifting yesterday with the hub...only found one thing and it was a gift for the mum in-law...a corningware pot handle thingy! Right this second we are talking about her corningware...and she just told me she never cooked in them because she thought they were just for serving! Hee hee!! This woman has more kitchen/serving/party stuff than any 3 families! Happy Holidays!

  7. Wow you definitely are very organized and thorough. I haven't even thought about goals for the new year but I do like the ones you listed about the house cleaning and going through it with a box and donating. It's needed from time to time. We just did that the other day in daughters room and I was amazed at all the stuff we accumulated for the donation box. Good luck with your plan. Merry Christmas!

  8. I'm with your first commenter! I'm going to do a version of 1,2,3 and 10 definitely. I've started a bit of a purge already but having a few days at home off altogether will help. Plus time off is my big goal. I want to sleep, read, eat and drink, maybe do some baking. You sure are an inspiration! :)

  10. We have many of the same goals, only I'm not going to get rid of clothes. I need to buy more!! (er, or I need to at least lose weight so I can fit into what I already have...)

    1. I won't be fitting much of what I have if I lose 10ish more lbs as planned so I'll be writing a combo wardrobe purge/wardrobe essentials post :D Shall be fun. I wish I would have kept the clothes that were too small before I lost weight so I could lose 'em now. Stash those clothes out of the way 'til you fit them again!

  11. What a wonderfully inspiring post. I especially loved your life's mission about having meaningful life outside the status quo and to curate unique and inspiring items and artwork. 12. Wow you are ambitious! And you sure have a lot of energy. Ill be 36 this year and your post makes me feel a bit exhausted, well the cleaning parts do. Wtih 8 pets (5 dogs and 3 cats) Ive given up on clean floors but its totally worth it. I love your devotion to old things and unusual things, and your art is lovely too. I saw your question about my english bulldog Bob and yes he is full grown. He is actually getting up their in the age department, he will be 7 years old in April. He weights about 65 lbs

    1. Thank you! My boyfriend has an "Old English Bulldog" and he's enormous compared to others I've seen. Not sure if that type is much bigger than other is if he's secretly mixed. Yours is adorable :) I love their happy pig-snorts.

  13. I'm pretty much done with 2013 and looking forward to 2014. My goals for the new year: 1) Get back into a regular exercise routine, which tends to go in the toilet during the holiday season, 2) Continue increasing my average selling price on eBay and finding my niche, 3) Work on my list of (currently) 5 craft projects I would like to get done before the summer, 4) ramp up my Amazon business, and 5) get back to a more normal eating and sleeping schedule, which like # 1, goes esp haywire around the holidays.

    1. Boyfriend and I are starting exercise hardcore, very excited. Right now my exercise is vigorous home cleaning to finish everything on the list, that counts, right? :D

Our goals are quite similar, I've been going to bed earlier the past week and loooving the results, still need an hour or so more each night, it's so hard to be in bed by 9:30, I'm a terrible sleeper but refuse to go on sleeping pills or melatonin. And I too am trying to get my sales way up of course :)
