1) How long did it take you to amass your collection of mid century modern Christmas goodness, Sherri?
It has taken me about 5 years to collect the majority of the pieces, some were inherited.
2) What's your favorite piece of mid century modern Christmas gear?
My favorite piece in my collection are the ceramics made by my husband's MiMi. My second favorite is my green Aluminum tree.
3) What draws you to mid century modern items?
The simplicity and beauty of the vintage pieces. Nothing modern compares.
4) I completely agree there, the clean lines and shapes are timeless, just great design hands-down. What vintage item is on your dream list to own?
The #1 item on my vintage wish list is a pink aluminum Christmas tree.
5) Random fun: What's your favorite Christmas movie?
My favorite Christmas movie is A Christmas Story!
I have actually purchased most of mine from Antique stores, but I will purchase anywhere I can find it!
7) How many Christmas tree do you have displayed in your home right now?
11 Aluminum Christmas trees and 11 Ceramic trees. Insane...I know.

ReplyDeleteThanks! I aspire to have at least one gorgeous mod tree like hers! I need to go to a certain local antique mall and hunt one down. She told me the wall ornament tree was a rusted mess when she found it and she only realized what it was later, then cleaned it up to display. The story inspired me to look at the neglected finds more carefully, they could be mod treasures that just need some work.

ReplyDeleteI have to admit, I spent years thinking of aluminum trees like they appeared in A Charlie Brown Christmas - a big solid sheet of aluminum in a tree shape. It's embarrassing, but only in the past couple of years did I realize they actually looked like this! So much better than Charlie Brown's!
That's what I thought as a kid, too on the aluminum trees, haha. We just weren't raised in the era to know. I'd love a couple of my own too, especially after seeing this!

DeleteI have to agree with several other comments. My favorite is the tree embroidery/crewel wall hanging and the metal wall hanging with ornaments! I have always wanted a pink tree. A big one! My husbands thinks Im insane. The kids aren't feeling it either. But one day, I will get one, put it up and decorate it, and they will think its the most beautiful thing ever....one day....

ReplyDeleteIndeed. We did used to keep ours up until Three Kings Day, the gift giving day often celebrated in Spanish speaking countries. (We did one gift on 3 Kings and the rest on Christmas.)

DeleteI'd also like to know more about that wire wall hanging Christmas tree that she has the ornaments on. I'm obsessed with it since we can't have trees due to mischievous cats.
ReplyDeleteI'll ask her about it, she got it at an antique mall where it was in a state of disrepair and when she discovered the use she fixed it up and hung it. She did tell me another sad story of her kids playing fetch with the dog and throwing a ball at the piece, knocking their favorite heirloom vintage ornaments to the floor. It happened in slow motion, so painful, so vivid I'm sure the memory is in the scarred hearts! So it's still a precarious way to hang ornaments and would have to be high up with no furniture under it that a cat could hop on the access it.

DeleteThis Christmas collection puts my very small vintage bottle brush tree collection to way shame! I just went through my Mom's Christmas stuff...and they had already gotten rid of all their ornaments??? Who does that? They only put little trees she crafted from wire hanger and garland around the house now. Even though my house is so very mid Century Modern, it is missing the ever so lovely kitch that this wonderful collector put together. Love it!
ReplyDeleteMy mom weaves tales of the amazing 1960s goodness her mom had that were unfortunately not left to her. There's no heirlooms in my family, this may one of many reasons why I'm drawn to vintage.
DeleteWhat a treat for the eyes! I thoroughly enjoyed the virtual tour. I have massive amounts of antique ornaments (takes up almost a full closet) that I inherited from my grandmother. I have enough to fill two aluminum christmas trees. Their sparse gaps are ideal for filling a tree with beautiful ornaments. I don't do a monochrome effect like traditionally suggested at the time of their heyday.
ReplyDeleteTips on how I scored mine aluminum trees: first, shop around off season for the best $$ deals, and second go to estate sales in which someone is clearing out grandmother's or an older aunt's house - you know, the houses that people have lived in for 50-60 years - they are treasure troves.
Thanks for the aluminum tree hunting tips. I haven't spotted an aluminum tree an estate sale yet but I'll keep hunting.
