Things I Didn't Buy at The Thrift Store: Return of the Damn High Prices!

Last weekend I thrifted with my pal Greg. He's got a good eye, and since he's just in it for the adventure he's a perfect thrifting buddy (No competition!) I feel bad for him though, 'cause last week he had to endure lots of cursing as I read outlandish Thrift Store prices.

I guess it's back to the flea markets for me, but here's what the thrift store finds shouted at me last week:

What did you leave behind at the thrift stores? And what would you be tempted to buy in this post?

  1. I went to GW yesterday and all their prices were too high to resell. I may go back and get that pokemon sheet even though it was $6.99 for one damm sheet while the others were $2.99 wth?

  2. Becky: It's a Digimon sheet ;) If it was Pokémon I might have put it in my cart without a second thought. And hell yes, the prices are getting too high in there.

  3. there are loads of great things i find but the price is too high for resale. it seams as thought thrifts are getting to big for their britches. although, on my last major shopping trip, i did notice the shops were much fuller of merchandize than the past year. so maybe prices will come down now that there's more inventory.

    1. I hope that's the case. At least we have plenty of options where I live and the junking and flea marketing is rich with opportunity...

  4. I dunno, you coulda painted that mushroom up super cute Van. ;) Mighta sold me on that one. I need a flea market to compare my GW prices to. I suspect they are much too high, but I'd like confirmation.

Also, you aren't selling boats?! WTF?

    1. Yeh! I buy the sexiest damn boats and they will not move at the Antique Stores! But I hope they'll move when I finally launch my Etsy shop.

  5. Technically, they are not a true thrift store. They buy their items from the Veteran's donation center next door. I'm sure they pay little for it, but that is why they resell for a high price. If you check it out, they're not a non-profit like most thrift stores in town. They're there to make money, not help a cause and give a good bargain in the process.

As a side note, in a sense they do help the Veteran's thing, but if the veteran's was the actual thrift store the prices would be cheaper and the charitable giving would be much higher. That doesn't mean I won't shop there, but its why their prices are so high.

    1. Do you mean "The Thrift Store" where most of the photos are taken for this post. I've never gotten the vibe that they're anything but a for-profit thrift store.

I suppose I don't have a problem with businesses being businesses, more power to them. I just can't justify paying their prices when I'm buying to resell. The way the store is always jam-packed and cash-only is rather inconvenient as well.

  7. Honestly? I'm not tempted by any of these items. Sometimes the secret to shopping thrift is to find something that the store does not think is valuable...

    1. I normally just take photos of items that catch my eye first. The only thing here that -truly- tempted me was the mushroom jar. Anything else overwhelemed me and ended up in my cart ;)

From my experience the pricing will just be luck. Sometimes something valuable will be cheap and worthless things will be expensive and vice versa.

  8. I enjoy your blog very much. I have been shocked to see how much the prices at GW have increased in my area just in the last year. I don't often purchase to resell, but I do purchase items to use as raw materials in my business and also for my own personal needs. The GW stores here used to be awesome with all kinds of stuff, lots of choice, and now their inventory has gone way down and the prices have gone way up. Very disappointing.

    1. It's crazy to think about too when you think of parents that rely on Goodwills to clothe their families out of necessity...bad Thrift Stores! :P

  9. I have left many items behind at GW lately...their prices have gotten more expensive than what I'm seeing for sale in the Antique stores! So much for "thrift"...

Recently, I found a Scrabble game for $4.99 at GW...I shook it and there were NO letter tiles in it. Just the board and instructions...very sad.

Sometimes, there are still other non-profit smaller Thrift Stores in my area with "thrift store" prices...too bad the bigger chain ones are charging HIGH prices for stuff and broken junk.

I am finding WAY better deals at Estate Sales and Auctions these days...

    {Your postings crack me up!}

    1. I've seen that with game boards at Thrift Stores, too. Madness! And I too have encountered cheaper finds in antique malls. I definitely need to go to more auctions and estate sales, can't wait!

  10. I love your captions-too funny! I found an adorable sheet perfect for fabric at goodwill recently, which they wanted $10 for (jaw drop) -I came back when they were having a 50% off sale because I really (REALLY) wanted it, and noticed on the hanger was a pillow case as well-but when I got to the register they wanted to charge me $10 for the sheet AND $10 for the pillowcase. Let me repeat that. $10 for the PILLOW CASE (as in single. one. separately from the sheet). Nooooo thanks. I only go to goodwill out of habit these days. Their prices are too high to furnish my own home, much less resell!

  11. I have noticed the same outrageous prices around here. I am normally after stuff for my kids ( toys and clothes). Do you think it would be worth me checking out the flea markets here in JAX...do have any suggestions?

    1. A lot of yard sales will have kid and baby clothes for exceedingly cheap prices, you search for ones with kid's clothes on craigslist. I don't see much kid's clothes at the flea markets, occasionally, but not often. You should check out "The Bargain House of Fleas," and the "Ramona Flea Market" anyway, they do have cheap housewares and furniture aplenty. Toys, too.
