Home Organization Inspiration: Tips for a Refreshed Bedroom and Wardrobe

I've been hard at work on my ambitious 26 before 27 list behind-the-scenes. I accomplished #11 and have purged over 100 items (can't wait to do more!) and I'm practically complete with #2) Deep cleaning and deep organization. I thought this would be the perfect time to reflect on the room I'm most pleased with at the moment, my now fresh and relaxing bedroom and newly purged closet and wardrobe! Here are some tips for making your room of rest perform at it's best:

1. Only the Essentials: I removed everything but exactly what was needed and love the results. The bed breaking and having to be removed was accidental but I enjoy the open space so much I might never replace it! Having little visual clutter in the bedroom makes it such a respite from my workspace where things get chaotic!

2. Your Favorite Things: A bedroom is so pleasant when you're surrounded with your favorites. I took advantage of my apartment's high ceilings and installed a gallery wall in my bedroom. I display my favorite Prince records in there, too! They make me happy. I chose Prince for the bedroom for the sexy music, but of course!

Left side: winter clothes stashed in luggage, art supplies in cases, excess packing supplies in the middle for now. Left side has spare clothes for BF when he spends the night. This is ALL my clothes now! Love it!

3. Only the Best, None of the Rest: As for the wardrobe, I only hang my favorite, seasonal, and most flattering pieces.  If I don't feel 100% comfortable in it or if it's winter clothing I store it in my carry on luggage (seen pictured above, far right corner). If I feel meh about it, it's just donated. It's so nice to open my closet and pick out what to wear in seconds, no digging, ever! And anything I pick will be a favorite.

Winding down after a stressful work day and starting a new one in my new minimalist bedroom and bathroom is so nice, can't wait to get the rest of the house in the same perfect working order. I'm close!

What are your home goals? Got any home decor items on your thrift wish list? I need a big cabinet to hold all my bubble wrap, boxes, and other work supplies!

    1. Me too! All local stuff, stuff I made, or stuff from my childhood. :) The moon and solar system maps came with my first telescope.

  2. We all really need a basement. I had a basement growing up in Detroit that was as big as the rest of our house. It was an old house built in the 20's and it had wall to ceiling built in cabinets along every wall, storage under the staircase, a walk in pantry that was so large it could have been a bedroom. And then it had a separate large room that my dad used as his office. It was the basement of dreams! And that house wasn't even that large. And now I live in a large house with hardly any storage! No attic, no walk in pantry, no basement....Ugh. Storage is always a problem! Someone needs to find a way to make basements in Florida an option!

    1. AGREED. I have no choice but to store work supplies in the bedroom closet until I find a big enough cabinet for it all in the work space. I gave in and bought a (CRAPPY!) one from Target but it's too small.

My childhood home in Italy had THE BASEMENT TO END ALL BASEMENTS. It was incredible. As much square footage and likely more than the three huge house units above it. I need to find a way back there some day to see it!

  3. I know exactly what you are feeling. I am surrounded by 'stuff', love this stuff else I wouldn't be finding it to sell. Awww, to have that serene environment to go, to relax in and be able to gather my thoughts without all the lovely distractions from my wonderful stuff. I always think of Rachel Zoe when she mentioined in one of her episodes while furnishing her condo in LA how she is surrounded by so much stuff, beautiful stuff, so her living space simplified and decorated in elegant white.

Surround yourself with what you love, love Prince's songs, your space fits you, very relaxing, love the blues and lavenders, very relaxing colors.

  4. Very nice! I totally agree about clothing. If you don't wear it often, get rid of it!

    1. Yep! It was tough to separate my emotional attachment to certain pieces I don't wear and just trash it but it's so much better without them.

  5. I purged so well when I here to Florida (I purged 2/3 of my stuff) I felt I could freely add. After 2 years I really want to purge again because I prefer the spacious over the stuff.

    1. I feel the same way with spacious over stuff! Since I moved here over a year ago I'd like to think I got rid of much more than 2/3 worth of stuff, certainly over half since I first moved to the last space. It's so liberating!

  6. Oh yes there is loads on my wish list at present. Still hankering to replace our buffet/sideboard so we are on the hunt for an amazing Eames style sideboard that is of the right proportions for our dining room wall. We desperately want a starburst clock for our dining room wall too we have cathedral ceiling in our dining area. I'm also longing for an old kids school desk and chairs.

Oh the list could go on, but on well vintage and thrift and the perfect pieces take time.

    1. Yep, that's the hard part is waiting and hunting patiently to find the right piece. I want a nice big cabinet to house all my work supplies (preferably mid century modern but I'll take what I can get so I can get to work!), a mid century modern sectional sofa, 2 mid century modern night stands, mod credenza or 2 and 4 tall bar stools. Maaaybe a nice set of mod lamps, too. That's actually a greatly reduced "want" list for me. :P

I love old kid's school desks and chairs too, rarely encounter them though. Gotta hunt harder!

  7. Great Post! I need to do a similar bedroom/closet organizational session. I have way too many clothes that I got years ago that have been in the "maybe i'll wear it someday" pile for way too long and just need to be donated. I also like the idea of hanging all the clothes you feel really good in, i'm gonna have to try that one.

    1. Dooo it, I won't go back to having an overstuffed wardrobe. I love that any piece I pick out will be a favorite.

  9. I love your bedroom! I have a gallery wall over my bed with art that I love too! I really need to get better about #3 though. I'm horrible about keeping clothes that I don't currently wear - mostly pre-baby things that I'm hopeful to wear again soon! I'll probably still end up keeping them, but I think I'm going to implement your "only the best" rule and put them up in storage, hanging only the things I enjoy wearing now. There's nothing more depressing than opening your closet and seeing a bunch of clothes that don't fit hanging there!

    1. I have some clothes I want to wear again when I lose some more weight put away in the carry-on luggage. I regret my initial big purge of things that didn't fit years ago because they'd fit me now! Luckily I found a few pieces in the attack. Nice to keep them as a reward when you accomplish the weight loss goal, but you're right, having them hanging in the closet is just the opposite. Discouraging and depressing.

  10. This post is just in time for me! I recently moved to a new apartment with higher ceilings and I'm so excited to hang all of the artwork I've been collecting. We have almost identical closets and I still have so much space on my rod that I'm going to start hanging my better pieces there as you have suggested! No more cramming into drawers!

    On my thrifty furniture wishlist:
-2 drawer filing cabinet...bonus points if it doesn't look exactly like a filing cabinet
    -TV stand
    -2 bar stools

  12. Apart from the decorated bedroom I also liked your storage cabinet and the way you have stored the things in your closet it is always great to share such a nice thing to me.

  13. We all get good inspiration for home decor and maintenance; especially, we have emotionally attached with our bedroom. Therefore, we need good inspiration to decorate our bedroom; apart from a bedroom, we should also take the support of inspiration to repair our life and career. So, we never deny the importance of inspiration.
