Thrift Haul: EPIC Antique Toys Finds & More in Time for Christmas! Mod Smalls + Sales

'Twas a week of epic hauls despite only going to two flea markets and one store's "yard sale"! And the flea markets seemed to be of a bust at first, just goes to show you gotta be patient to get the best goods! By the way, been working like crazy to get everything photographed, listed, packaged and shipped between the Black Friday sale and everything else, I promised myself I wouldn't be up past midnight working but here I am! Anywho, let's behold the glorious goods I found this time:

GOLD UNICORNS! These were huge and I had a hunch they'd sell quickly and they were gone in a day. They're awesomely kitschy.

I knew this beautiful book of illustrations on animals would be a slower sale but I absolutely love the drawing in it, so that's okay with me. I'd like to scan every single one of them. I made sure to include my favorite illustration on plankton on the listing. Check it out on Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

I ran out of time to list each of these tiny (quarter sized or so?) figurines individually so they're on Etsy as a group Woodland Critter theme for now. ------->>> On Etsy

And whimsical tiny kitties, how can a cat lady resist? That tiny gold present is about the size of a dime to give you some size perspective. See them on Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

A calico just like any of these three beauties is on my cat wish list. These guys were too cute to leave behind. See them on Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

And this tiger-striped guy had to come home with me too. See him hanging out on Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

Aaah this photo is crooked, drives me crazy but I have not the time or patience to straighten it right now. Hideous! Evil! I like this silly kitschy bar sign anyway, see it On Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

The absolutely stunning Fire King mugs sold instantly, I had a hunch they would. I also suspect they may be rare and worth more than I thought? Boo!

The gorgeous siamese cat with the golden eyes is still on Etsy, she cleaned up amazingly well as is sitting beside me on the computer, love that piece and her crazy eyes!  ------->>> On Etsy

This Bowling Kit and many of the antique-style 1920s-1950s toys came from one vendor with a killer collection. My inner toy, graphic design, and typeface lover could not resist scooping up a bit lot of 'em! I will enjoy displaying them and using them as props and for projects until they sell. See this tabletop bowling kit On Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

This Barbie and Midge lunchbox has gorgeous graphic design and cleaned up beautifully, like-new on the outside with a little work from my "magic eraser". Check her out On Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

I also found a lot of vintage board games! This really is a graphic design lover's dream score. See Easy Money on Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

This Game of the States board game also had some inventive details. I'm still admiring looking at each one and am tempted to play this game. Remember when most of our vegetables were local and not imported? Le sigh, game. You're making me sad. See it On Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

And classic clue, this game came with gorgeous illustrations on the cards, a fun detective notes sheet, instructions, a metal murder weapons including the infamous candle stick, knife, crowbar, rope, gun, and wrench! ------->>> On Etsy

I'd been searching for a box like this one for displays and use as a prop. I couldn't resist! See it On Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

And more beautiful box fun, the look of a worn colorful toy box is absolutely irresistible to me. See Krazy Ikes on Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

And I found another Fisher Price Happy Apple, this time in better shape than the last one I sold. He's hanging out on Etsy awaiting a new home. ------->>> On Etsy
This atomic style gyroscope is worth it for the box alone, but coming with the awesome toy makes it even better. Appeals to the childhood astronomer in me, such a gorgeous piece. See it on Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

This Touring card game is said to be from the 1920s, those cards are in perfect shape though. Would love any information on this set. It's awaiting a new home on Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

I loved the graphic designs on this squeaking toy and "lovable ugly" lion, love his odd face and resemblance to a "Wild Things" creature. He had to come with me! Would love to release them from their plastic prison but that's they're future owner's job. They're chilling On Etsy awaiting liberation. ------->>> On Etsy

Tin Toys! I was bummed I missed my chance to get a large retro wind-up tin toy of a guy riding his motorcycle, always wanted me own large metal toy like that! I'll continue my hunt but at least I found these two tiny toy cards to admire in the meantime. See them On Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

This is also the haul of toys! My fondness for them shall never wane. This instant collection is on Etsy and will also add color to my Southern Crossing Antique Mall Booth. ------->>> On Etsy

And I have so much love for these beautiful 1940s/50s plastic toys. Does anyone have more information on these? They are so elegant with gorgeous hues, love the ice skaters, milk man, animals, baseball players, boxers, cowboys, so beautiful to look at and use for props and craft projects! I'll continue to use them happily until they sell and may start to sell them individually when I have time to photograph them all. See them on Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

I got these toy coins in the same bag as the large lot of retro toys, these have nice heft to them, the silver ones seem to be real metal. I love the colors and designs on them. See them on Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

I went a little crazy at the chance to own multiple metal toy cars of my own, oops. I shall enjoy this Grehound bus until he finds a new home with a collector or as a gift. See it On Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

I may keep this book to sell the illustrations separately as ephemera if it doesn't sell soon because the drawings inside are 1950s perfection, such a fun little cook book. I believe it was tossed in for free with a lot sometime last week and I didn't get to documenting it yet. It's on Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

I went back and forth on this glorious map, I knew it would be a hard piece to sell but it makes such a statement spread out on the wall. I love the vintage design and illustrations and that it says it's Puerto Rico's first Tourist map. I'm half Puerto Rican and most of my family lives on the island, it holds a special place in my heart and I'll happily display the map as an art piece until it sells. See it on Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy
And a final glorious and lucky score is this beautiful Bud Light bar lamp. I can never hand on to finds like this long, I found a PBR one like it once that sold lighting fast so I decided to raise the price on this one a bit. A very fun piece that would be right at home in any man cave! See it on Etsy. ------->>> On Etsy

  1. I have that apple from when I was little! It managed to last through my brother, me, his kids, and then my brute of a son broke the stem :) Nothing stands up to him!

Love the vintage cookbook as well. I'm pretty sure I actually have it somewhere. My grandma had a bunch of old children's cookbooks from her days of teaching 4H - now I need to go search!

Great finds! Hope you sell a lot today!

    2. Oops, I didn't notice I wrote they were from a board game, I copied another post and that stuck. Looks like they may be selling anyway despite the wrong title. Boo! Wanted to hold on to those longer, they are glorious.

  4. Great finds!!!!

The plastic toys are called "gumball toys", they often came in cracker jack and other candied treats as a prize, people would collect them. They make awesome treats to glue on cards or scrapbooks, and they're great for vintage piniata parties!

  6. I'm a sucker for a vintage boardgame. I have several from my childhood that I have collected...or if I see one based on a TV show, I can't pass it up. MY boyfriend found a pretty spectacular bookshelf game not long ago for $2. It was miraculously completely intact since the 60s. Also, FIRE KING MUGS! I love. I am always on the hunt for a good deal on the Kimberly blue fire king mugs...well because they are pretty and they share my name.

  10. I love all of these. I found 2 happy apples once at the same sale. Kept one for our boy and sold the other. I found this link useful on dating them...the difference is in that stem. The short one you've got is probably from the 80s. http://www.thisoldtoy.com/l_fp_set/toy-pages/400-499/435-happyapple.html Yours looks brand new!

  15. Van,

I'm not sure what you sold your Fire King Kimberly mugs for but those look to be the highly desirable Light Amber. I've never found them in the wild but have found and sold the darker amber ones a couple times. It's no fun to sell too low but it also means you have good taste and are finding the right things!

    ReplyDelete
  16. They did look like a light version of the amber ones so that explains why they sold INSTANTLY at $27 for the pair. But at least they sold, I only paid $2.00 as a consolation ;p

  19. Great haul! I had the Game of the States and that exact same version of Clue (aka Clue-do) when I was little. Isn't it nice to sell vintage toys and games? Those always sell.

I found some info on that Parker Bros Touring Card Game on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touring_(card_game)

BTW, a previous commenter mentioned about the mistake in the Wonders of Nature listing. I also noticed that the third photo you have in that listing appears to be from another book by Richard Scarry, unless the folks who wrote that nature book decided to go anthropomorphic - lol!
