Freshly Curated: A "Thrift Break" Cheat (Globes, Kittens, Art!) and Work Thoughts

My morning routine is simple: wipe the sleep out of eyes/brush teeth/maybe comb hair a little ("Beauty" done. There's a reason I don't do fashion posts. For now.), feed the incessant and begging Yuko, drink four glasses of water, a little coffee (usually a fruit smoothie but I'm so tired these days), edit or finish blog post for the day, publish. Since starting the #100happydays (read more) project I find myself wanting to take a picture of my computer every morning and type about how much I love writing and editing while stimulants flow through my system give a creative rush.

My work gives me anxiety. (Thought stream: Where are the sales? Need more merchandise? I have too much now. Gotta clean. I want my posts and photos to be better. AAAAH! Never caught up!), sometimes I think of quitting, but I have a deep, abiding love for it- especially writing, staging/editing photos and getting lost to the work flow for hours. I'm still on a thrifting break but damn, turns out I still love my job even when I "hate" it. (Let's work it out, work, baby. We can make it work.) I went to a couple of thrifts this week and couldn't put back the goodies in today's post:

A vintage seller can always use a well-priced globe in their inventory. Not sure if this guy is vintage but it does look like the ones I remember from school. It will be going to my Southern Crossing booth for $25.00- unless you'd like it? Let me know. (E-mail.)

Don't mind the blurry Yuko-head. My mom found this beautiful retro clutch at the Goodwill pound store and bought it over to me. I don't sell these well, not apparel to stage purses with perhaps? It will go to Etsy soon, but make me an offer!

I picked up and put down this adorable Calico kitten big eye art piece so many times and decided it had to join my inventory. It'll go to Etsy and the Antique Mall booth soon.

The face on this thing is just too precious! And I not-so-secretly want a Calico of my own someday. She has big olive eyes just like...

The Yuko. This is her "hurry, hurry, feed me now" face, she's lingering around her food bowl. She never speaks unless she wants food or is telling a stranger to back off. Blurry, sorry, she wouldn't hold still.

I've been lucky finding silver storage baskets, they're usually expensive when I encounter them but this guys was as cheap as the last. Going to use it to organize some things in my pantry for now. The typewriter was my moms, one of our very scant family heirlooms. Not for sale.

My mom also found this guy at the Goodwill by-the-pound store, it's perfect! Surprised to find the old gal in such great shape, you really can find good, unbroken mod things at the "pound store" level with persistence and a hand from Lady Serendipity.

Mom also gave me these fans, she bought a lot of these Philippines souvenirs from the Goodwill store. They are gorgeous, I'll be putting them in Southern Crossing soon.

She's going to take her lot with her on her upcoming trip to Puerto Rico to pass out to family members as gifts.

For any who wonder where The Yuko hides in shots these days, she's usually perched high somewhere watching me work, biding her time until her next feed.

Buy It. You Know You Want it.... All of these items will be listed online (or ebay or Etsy) soon (will update with links) if you'd like to buy anything you see PLEASE do e-mail me! Get it all away from me! Halp!

  1. An easy peasy way to tell if you globe is vintage...Russia vs USSR. If you think it's much older, this is my goto site for dating globes: http://www.longwood.edu/cleanva/datingglobes.htm

  3. Hey, that's a good globe tip! Neat items and pretty kitty! I've seen that worried, she's going to forget to feed me look many times even though I never missed one yet. I found just a few things at an estate sale on Sat, but the house was so unusually clean in was a pleasure to be there.

    1. I love checking out estate sale houses, especially old ones in my area I've been dying to see anyway.

  4. I love the calico art! I have had calico cats my whole life, I am a sucker for them! Yuko looks like she is up in your grill all the time! My cat Joby's new favorite spot is right behind my butt on the computer chair. She kind of acts like a lumbar support. She takes up half the seat, and I am sitting on the other half. And as the minutes go by, she tends to expand, leaving me with less and less chair butt space. Eventually I have to gently push her off. She stubbornly refuses, so I end up having to pick her up and set her on the ground. I can see Yuko doesn't give you much space either! Too funny!

    1. I've always wanted a calico, they're so beautiful. And yes, Yuko is usually all-up in my grill, particularly when it's not conductive to sleep or work. As cats will do ;D Yuko sits on the back of my chair too put on the top behind my head. Will occasionally paw at my head for attention, haha.

  5. The globe looks exactly like the one I had in the mid 90s. I have a Calico. She is only super, real nice when she wants food or water.

    1. They truly can be nature's little sociopaths, Yuko is sweetest when she's hungry.

  6. Not that she doesn't get either. Our other cat is fat & devours everything & both have taken to drinking the dogs water (for whatever reason IDK). He's big, 80 pounds.. so sometimes we don't notice when he finishes.

    1. They always act like they're starving every time, the little sociopath cats ;D Mine sure as hell does. Oh and yep this globe definitely looks like the ones from mid childhood.

  7. Great typewriter! Love the fans, too. My hubby is from Puerto Rico so I've gotten to visit a couple of times. Your last post about book-keeping hit a nerve because I am already behind this year... Ugghh.

    1. I let myself slip on the past couple of thrift trips before this one to be honest, catch-up time ;p My mom and I want to go again together sans family sometime ;D My whole family's from there, it's absolutely gooorgeous to visit.

  8. The by-the-pound store can be great, can't it? It does take a certain level of fortitude. And, IMO, gloves. It just seems so much dirtier than the regular thrifts. Don't know if that is true, or just my perception :)

Yuko and my Mr Scampers are definitely two of a kind! Scampers isn't over his merchandise-breaking phase yet...

    1. Yuko has only broken my ultimate favorite things, it's a talent. Seriously, without fail- my nightmare before christmas lamp and a space age planter that look like a flying saucer met their demise. I need to bring gloves next time, I think it's just because you have to dig and you can't see what your hand could touch next that sleeves me out. I had something really bad happen last I was reaching into piles in the dark when I worked at the movie theatre. Involved two different bodily fluids... oh horror of horrors...

  10. Van, you can get quite a bit more for that globe on ebay. Check the completeds http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=vintage+globes&_sop=16&LH_Sold=1&_osacat=0&_from=R40&LH_Complete=1&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l2632.R2.TR2.TRC1.A0.H0.Xvintage+world+globes&_nkw=vintage+world+globes&_sacat=37958.

    1. I wonder if I can with the globe not being vintage or particularly noteworthy? Will take a look at it some more. I have to get back to working on eBay in earnest but I don't sell any of my vintage wares on there. The only thing I've sold from it are my valuable comic books.

    2. Van, is the Soviet Union (USSR) on the globe? If so, you know it's vintage. In any case globes are in high demand.

    3. Nope it's Russia so I assumed it was a 90s one I remember my classrooms, that's what it looks like.

  11. I use old wore baskets everywhere pantry, to hold measuring cups or lids and best of all our outdoor gear is sorted in three big baskets--they are amazing! I love the yuko, her all black counterpart thunder played with a dead mouse for three hours today "SKY DEMONS!" (the oatmeal)

  12. There is nothing simpler then pouring premade food into your kittens bowl. Making your own food will require you to spend time making it every few days. Best Kitten Food brands
