Busy-Brained Entrepreneur Life-Updates, Confessions, and Thoughts for Improvement

I've got to admit I'm in the midst of some confusing, busy times...but they're incredibly stimulating and rewarding as well. I thought I'd pause for an honest post on the Good and Bad at the moment. Photo above a random shot of me crafting/hanging crap before packing orders and rushing out for a kitchen shift before coming home late in the evening to write early into the morning. Note the eyes- so tired. The background; messy. Gah!

Good 1) I've Still Got It: Success Applying For Marketing and Writing Gigs

I submitted my resume and writing samples out and already have some freelance marketing and writing gigs lined up. I'm so excited to stretch the marketing muscles again and set clients up with PR, social media, and content marketing strategies. A recent quote from a potential new hire means a lot coming from an entrepreneur of his caliber; WalMart is one of his clients:

I'm Impressed. Like, you have me wowed. And I've lived in Austin & San Francisco so I'm comparing you with the talent over there.

Good 2) I Started My Back-To-School Process and Qualify For Grants

Thanks all for your honest feedback on my last to college or not discussion. I'm attempting a school come-back! My grants look very promising and I'm excited to continue to get through school for free or close to it.

Now to decide between journalism and photojournalism- so hard to choose between two loves! It's like robots and dinosaurs--- don't make me choose!  Leaning toward photojournalism.

I feel happy to have a direction and path with it and sincerely want to use the knowledge I'll gain from it to make connections and land positions that will help as many people as possible. I want to work harder on woman's/animal right, whole living, and of course, creative/art causes. I want to make a big impact!

Good 3) Making Friends, Going Out, Exploring, Letting Go

I've been making new friends, getting outside as much as possible again and exploring new things: vital for the future of a writer/creator and just good for the soul in general. I've also let go on perfection on bit - not striving to complete as much, not worrying if a blog post isn't done on time or perfect (more on that below) and other work-related things I tend to punish myself by staying inside for if they're not completed. I have many trips, festivals, work-out classes, and bike rides planned already!

***

Bad 1) Hard to Check in on my Antique Mall Booth

It's just torture to try to get to my antique mall booth to switch it out with all the other balls I'm juggling. I also lost my price tag stamp and I'm waiting for on the new one to be shipped in from the UK. The energy runs out there but I'm trying to get back on this, it's a personal goal of mine to brand out my upcoming new booth and make it as fully stocked and beautiful as possible. Actually, my Etsy shop could use some loving too.

Bad 2) My List Isn't Anywhere Near Complete

I only have a few days left to make a dent in my 15 Crazy Goals list, time to get cracking today and tomorrow, ah!

Bad 3) Decision Paralysis Continues to Plague Me

I want to 1) Be way ahead on blog posts 2) have my sponsored banner/business cards finished 3) Have planned guest posts completed 5) Change the "Thrift Core" business/blog name...

but decision paralysis neurosis bullcrap is making it so incredibly difficult. I want it all to look good, read right and receive good feedback and it's really holding me back. Sometimes I want to turn off comments because I compare posts that have a lot to posts that have fewer and less comments can sometimes make me feel like I didn't succeed with my post, but I leave them on to encourage me to strive harder with my content.

There are always going to be ups-and-downs and we strive to improve our lives. Confusion, anxiety, paralysis, nervousness, fear, insecurity, being a broke bohemian (formerly decently-paid writer) barely being paid for hours put in- I'm experiencing a lot! Yet two nights ago I had a vivid dream that all the insecurities were shed, I was in New York City confidently strutting into my dream writing job in a sleek urban high rise. I'll continue to channel dream-me's confidence, it's been working wonders thus far.

Tag, you're it: What are three good and three bad things going on in your life? Would love for us to vent in the comments. And of course, would love any suggestions on improving my neurosis, too. Would you like a once a week and/or once a week business-behind-the-scenes update posts?

  1. I'd love a once a week behind the scenes update. As for comparing comments numbers, I read your summary the other day on your whole eating series and I wanted to comment but the comments were off…I wanted to say how much I enjoyed those posts. I was actually influenced to tray a smoothie which I hadn't tried in years. I've had several since just fruit, carrots, ice and a little juice. All healthy stuff. It makes me feel really good. So my point is this even though they may not get 'as many' comments if you didn't make those type of posts you'd miss out on helping the people you want to help. And your blog wouldn't have that 'extra little something' that is purely you.

    1. Thanks for the feedback Nancy, I LOVE knowing that it's inspired you to be healthier. A corker at the vegan kitchen just told me the same thing, that it sets me apart to stick with it. I think I'm just mad that I'm not trying my hardest on them. I'm satisfied no matter the feedback if I know I worked hard on it :D Will keep going with it but want to improve the quality.

  2. The comments trap is something we all probably fall into. I don't get many so you start thinking it's all a big waste of time, yet if I got a ton, it would take much more time to reply to them, etc. It's a hard line to balance, but sticking with what you like to talk about is important obviously. Congrats on the positive feedback on the resume. Good luck! I think behind the scenes posts are interesting.

    1. Thanks for the kind words. I definitely want to keep more behind-the-scenes honest looks on the blog. Will work at it :D

  3. I think spring is my most overwhelming time of year. During Winter we make our list of goals and things to accomplish. I don't think I could accomplish mine even with a wizards help. So I try to feel good about what I do get done and not beat myself too badly about the other. Don't worry about the comments, I never expect a reply and think other bloggers realize that we really don't have that kind of time and so don't expect it.

I read you more than I comment....but always enjoy your posts. Congrats on the writing gig and complements. My fav good thing going on, the owner where I sell asked me if I wanted to work for her helping with her estate sales....oh yeah, I'm all for that. :)

  4. I can't pick 3. TOO MUCH BUSYNESS! But, since you asked, I'll work on a list off-line and get back with ya. One day. Ahhhhhh!;)

You are doing great Miss List Maker. Congrats on the schooling!

    2. Good: 1) I have a full-time job I tolerate and it supports me, 2) We finally nailed down a wedding spot and I am claiming that everything but finding a gown is done & 3) I have a date with friends this week AT a baseball game - that's a two-fer win! ;)

Bad: 1) through 10) This whole social media, selling, and vintage fabulous-ness is overwhelming me to no end! I am spread too thin (...I think) and need to focus on one area (booth, Etsy, or start Instagram?!) and from that I probably need to stop buying so much even when it's gorgeous and practically a steal. And then there's the whole branding thing. I need to work on it. Just enough to be consistent. Beyond that, I need to focus on my bookkeeping/small business consult business. Oh and these 2 things should only take up maybe 1/8th of my time but they are consuming nearly all of my waking hours.

Do you charge for the session?! ;)

  5. You have to get over the no comments thing. Sometimes I just don't feel like commenting and yet you pop up on my sidebar, I go read you. I think the vegan posts probably don't get a lot of comments because its not easy TO comment on. You can only say, thanks or thats interesting so many times. Doesn't mean a lot of us out there are not enjoying the posts. As for the rest.......I just got up (no coffee even, what the??!) and now I feel overwhelmed. You are doing so much, good luck with it all! Just remember to sleep, your body really really needs it!

    1. I know I do for sure! After allowing myself to word-vomit my insecurities in this post (that's my most shameful one biz-wise it's pretty embarrassing for me) I now know it's merely because I know I didn't try my hardest/research a lot on those posts...gotta work harder. Thanks for reading Kari :) I will work on some sleep...someday. Bad me.

  6. Okay! I will tell you 3 good things, 3 bad things! I like lists! Bad things first: 1) Working with an attorney to deal with our builder regarding major structural issues with our house. We even had to test for Chinese drywall (our attorney advised us if we do have Chinese drywall, to stop paying the mortgage and just ditch the house!), 2) My seven year old daughter has to go in for an emergency tonsillectomy next week. (very scary, because when I had mine out, I had complications and had to be hospitalized for over a month and I almost died!) 3.Etsy business has been a bit slower than normal. Okay, now for the good things: 1) It appears that we DONT have Chinese drywall in our house (whew!), 2) My son has had lots of successful art shows lately! 3) Overall, I think life is pretty good and I am thankful to have a great husband, 2 amazing kids, an 18 year old cat who is as frisky as a kitten, a nice house, good health....etc. The only thing missing would be the skill to pee standing up. Other than that, no complaints!

    2. Thanks for the photo journalism tip, I think that will be my focus but I will talk to the program directors again for some honest feedback. Yay! Sorry to hear about your daughter, hope all will go well for her!

  8. Sorry, I have no help for neurosis--maybe a beer or something? lolzzz I'm lazy so 1 good thing is I love Asheville!! 1 bad thing is I am short of cash 'cause my hubby has less hours at work here. We actually have fun on our low budget, but I'm trying to fix up the tiny little rustic in-law suite and slow cash funds are hindering my plan!

  9. I love your honesty and for putting it all out there Van. I have no suggested cures for you other the to say I'm a believer in letting go and believing that the answers will rise to the top in good time, the right time. I'd give you three good and three bad right now but I'm currently tired.......take that as one bad then, little people here giving me very little sleep which sadly has a knock on effect to many things lagging at the moment. Oh well I'll get there tomorrow is always a new day.

  11. Oh this is fun: Good 1) My son just turned one and we've made it this far without him coming to any major harm, wahoo 2) My friend gave me two great dresses she didn't want anymore 3) the car windscreen wiper magically fixed itself
Bad 1) the book I bought about toddlers gives me the fear 2)the amount of work I have to do in my etsy shop makes me want to curl up 3) stock for the shop is slowly taking up every inch of "free" space in the house. This is great and yes I would definitely love weekly business updates!!
