Thrift Haul: Flea Market Temptations. Owls and other Groovy 1970s Knick Knacks.

I'm still trying to resist much hunting while I work on everything else on my epic list but the weather is so deliciously warm again I'm finding any excuse to be outside for as long as possible...damn you flea markets! So overwhelming, so much good stuff to attempt to leave behind! This was one of my first big hauls in a while:

First, a creepy clown! I'm a fan of them only for their kitsch and horror movie value. Clowns still freak me out. Just a tad. Would not like this face creeping out from under my bed to say the least. -------->>> On Etsy

This adorable little poodle earring holder also had to come with me, I was assured its vintage but it's so new-looking it looks modern. -------->>> On Etsy

This similar bear. Found them at the flea market with a little lot of vintage jewelry. They're adorable as a pair, may need to list them as such. -------->>> On Etsy

Hello owl! Had to scoop up this dramatic eye-lashed owl. Adorable guy to hang around. -------->>> On Etsy

This adorable kokeshi doll-style kimono wearing pin was from the same vendor who had the earring stands. I shall definitely enjoy this one until it's purchased. Damn all the photos in today's post are not of the caliber I'd like at all! I rushed them before I ran out of daylight. Some will get re-shoots. -------->>> On Etsy
And damn this whale ash tray. I went back and forth on it, tried to leave this beauty behind but my love of aquatic creatures wouldn't let me. Makes a fun conversation piece. -------->>> On Etsy
Owls don't sell as well as they used to but oh well, maybe I was feeling nostalgic for this style of owl? I used to scoop them up often. -------->>> On Etsy
I bought these with the intention of perhaps eventually painting but I dunno, I like these in their original form. Will wait on that. -------->>> On Etsy

I've bought and sold a couple of spice cabinets like these before, never one with the full set of awesome spice jars inside! -------->>> On Etsy
And hm...about this Scorpion guy. Certainly the type of horribly gaudy thing I try to avoid now-a-days but the  price was right and it was so strange.... -------->>> On Etsy

The same vendor had this kitschy mushroom clock for a steal. Everything in this post was a steal, that's why I try to avoid the flea markets these days! Too hard to leave the less-than-perfect stuff behind when it's dirt cheap. -------->>> On Etsy

And this radio, another thing I tried to leave behind. (Theme of this post.) Probably the best find of the day since I'm trying to stick to items from this era. -------->>> On Etsy

I also tried to walk away from this gorgeous, light (I only buy light easy-to-move pieces, I do this alone and want furniture-moving to be easy) mod side table but when he went down on the price I had to scoop it up. If you're local let me know if you'd like it, it'll be going to my Southern Crossing antique mall space soon.

The coolest part- a drawer doesn't pull out, instead the top lifts up. Very sexy piece! Sorry for the swiftly written post, it was half-finished by 2AM and finished-up by 9AM. Right now I have an hour left to tackle some items on my to-do list before rushing to a called-in vegan kitchen shift. Busy! But I enjoy staying kinetic.

Buy It. You Know You Want it.... All of these items will be listed online (or ebay or Etsy) soon (will update with links) if you'd like to buy anything you see PLEASE do e-mail me! Get it all away from me! Halp!

    1. Me too, he's gorgeous! Had to have it even though I try not to buy ash trays. Wouldn't mind keeping it around for when smoker friends visit, haha.

    1. Could you e-mail me at info@thriftcore.com? Thanks! I'm thinking $45.00 for it.

  3. My grandmother used to have that spice rack. Very nostalgic. She kept the sprinkles we used for our ice cream in it. The ice cream was kept in a Tupperware ice cream saver & scooped with a scoop like the one I just bought. My grandpa, who is 91 almost, had that radio in orange. I almost bought that poodle earring holder, buy checking eBay prices, I left her. The clock is very groovy. Wouldn't fit with my new decor style I'll be going for when we move, but still groovy.

    2. But you're supporting an awesome indie business owner who makes her full-time living curating curios if you buy from me ;) I do price match anyway sometimes for readers, putting it out there. I should but the poodle and bear together, they are adorable side-by-side on my desk right now.

I'm tempted to keep the spice jars myself for my bulk-buy spices, they're glorious. I didn't grow up with a grandma (one dead, one in Puerto Rico) so I wasn't raised with things from the 60s-70s, perhaps that's why I love the era so much. So exotic for me.

    3. Oh and yep, I've bought from resellers to resell more than once and those sales are always fast. I try not to price to let that happen anymore though. Not that I care if it happens, I'm sure I've had some West Coast buyers bulk-buy from me to sell items in an area where they can get more for it vs. here in the South East.

  4. Seriously that table is perfect! I have an old suitcase that I am considering converting into a table...I would like to use it for storage, but it seems impractical to have to remove a lamp etc everytime you have to get into the suitcase...so I think it would end up being non-functional. Also! SO MANY OWLS! I am always so astounded with the over abundance of owls while thrifting!

    1. Indeed! I normally wouldn't buy owls at all but these were a steal and I'm actually completely out of owls so it wouldn't hurt to bring some back in, they may get a white paint job. I agree on the inconvenience of this type of table top. I have one and don't use it since it hosts a lamp. This one is gorgeous either way with its mod skinny legs.

  5. The wooden owl with the eyelashes is quite mod. Fun find. That table is nice. Think it's handmade?

    1. I let myself go shopping the past two weeks, before that it was maybe a three-week break? I love breaks, I have hundreds and hundreds of bits of merchandise, don't wanna bring in more o_O I envy -you-, haha.

  7. Okay, really weird coincidence: Just this morning I was reading the November, 1964 issue of Consumer Reports (don't judge), and that radio was check rated. Original price was $32.95.

    1. That is awesome! Thanks for the tidbit on the radio. Wouldn't judge for that, was reading 1969 Playboys today...

    1. I love my sea creatures, so powerless against them...

  9. Love the ashtray! Great decorative piece. Also I love the scorpion needlepoint. I had a Pisces one (assuming we are looking at it from a astrological point of view), I had a pretty hefty price on it, and it sold lickety split! List it with zodiac tag words. Some sexy scorpion (zodiac) is going to snatch that up!

    1. He just sold, boo I wanted to enjoy him forever ;) I also assumed it was zodiac, will stick in those keywords. Thanks for the tip!

  10. Nice haul. Love the whale, the owl, the transistor radio! I think you should charge more for that radio though, just a tad. They are getting harder and harder to score.

    1. Thanks for the tip Angela, raised the price a bit. Especially considering I had it lower than it's retail price in the 1960s.

  11. Great finds! The whale is cool, reminds me of the Bosse figurines, I had a cat and bird similar but they were "in the style" as well. The radios seem to do well, I'd just found a Panasonic that went surprisingly fast

    1. Glad I'm not the only one. I love the illustration/graphic design of it but not the frame and the medium. I'll add him to eBay and see if he sells quick!

  13. Fun finds! Why try to resist? I (amazingly) had forgotten that there was a Sunday estate sale until fiance reminded me. So glad he did.... I can't wait to post what we found but we were both on cloud 9. Why do we get such a high from fun finds?! ;)

    1. I already have a lot of merchandise to catch-up on listing, tagging, and merchandise wise so I've been avoiding thrifting all together for a while. I'll feel better about estate sale hopping once I'm caught-up ! Can't wait.

  14. I'm loving the spice rack and the mushroom clock.

  15. You found some screamin' cool 70's things indeed. OMG that mushroom clock. I've been walking away from a plastic boomerang ashtray at my thrift for a couple weeks now, wearing me down.

    1. I love those things! But yeah, ash trays tend to sit forever and I try my best to avoid even when they're incredible. The whale guy above did sell fast. He's too cute to leave behind.

  16. I love ashtrays! I don't smoke, don't need so many hanging around, but if it's unusual, or colorful, or well, honestly, it doesn't have to be special. If it catches my eye, I'm a goner!

    1. I'm a sucker for them too. Never smoked, never will ;)
