Positive Body Image is Thrifty: Join The Hippie Side, Luke

I need you do something for me right now. (I mean it, now!) Embrace your wrinkles, curves, folds, and spots the same way you embrace the chips, cracks, and patina that give the vintage items we love their irresistible character and universal allure.

Proud quirky hippie nerd! No make-up or hair product in these photos, just me and my dinosaur.

Sick of advertisements telling you to fix every damn spot, too? There's a cream to "fix" everything, and an endless list of "flaws" we're programmed to repair. I'm an advocate for positive body image and 100% natural body care. I've been experimenting with natural skin and body care solutions all year and now I perch atop my Soap Box (had to say it!) to proudly share recipes, and preach the cause to the masses.

Remember my No Soap post? And my Natural Skin Care post? Expert more posts like that. Also Giveaways and sincere product recommendations from companies I've tried and believe in.

Join me and reject messages that demand you flat iron your curls and conceal your freckles. Be you. It's thrifty because you save a fortune on products that don't work. Stop wasting money on things you think you needed to feel good. Spend money on better things. Like dinosaur toys!

  1. I don't know....I'm all about my creams, masks, make up and hair color. I couldn't give them up. But I am all for positive body image. So work what you got people!

  2. I want to write posts about this too! I shower once a week. I don't usually wear deodorant. (I have some for back-up, but I never really use it.) I use baking soda to wash my hair. I own no hair products, especially the hot kind. I own no makeup, just chap stick. I never wear makeup, and I don't even own much jewelry. (I wish I hadn't pierced my ears, actually.)

  3. Becky, nothing wrong with that! ;) The future posts on this subject will be for people who don't wanna give up the maintenance. I'll be reviewing all natural products I love, like the stuff by http://www.100percentpure.com/

http://www.nomoredirtylooks.com/ always has excellent reviews, too.

  6. Oh Van, I would love to use less stuff, like soap and deoderant! Unfortunately, I am a 'STINKY' person without them. My skin is sooo oily I must wash my hair daily, or look like a walking slick. This condition of course means that makeup just runs down my face, so I never use it, unfortunately, deoderant also runs off me (specially in the extreme heat) so I have to use the super potent stuff, otherwise I smell worse than a skunk! Aaaand because of this I have to use powerful soap...I wish I smelled like cookies!!!!! Lucky girl!

  8. Angelika: Will do! I can't wait!

Lori: I smell like cookies from the coconut oil ;) I'll reveal my routines later. I'm all about people doing what works for them, not throwing products down the drain and cutting them cold turkey. I'll just give honest recommendations to help people interested in switching to organic products.

  9. Rae: LUCKY! And isn't life just so much easier when you stop going against nature? Maintaining straight hair not for me. Too much maintenance and expense!

  10. I'm looking forward to more posts on natural beauty. I especially want to hear about what you do for your long curls. Especially given the humid climate you live in. I can totally deal with the curls until it hits 80% humidity and then I just want to shave my head!
I can't live without makeup on my brows and eyeliner, though. Otherwise I just look really weird.

Also the Environmental Working Group website has a fantastic (and scary) beauty product database. It will really open your eyes as to how toxic some products can be.

  11. Monogirl: Going 100% natural and not washing your hair (or minimal washing) is the best thing you can do for curls! Chemicals and curly hair don't mix because the strands break and get damaged easier than other hair types. I'll write a detailed post with recommendations & tips soon.

  12. This post has a great message! I went 6 months without using shampoo or conditioner and used baking soda and vinegar instead. It was a good clean, but after 6 months it started to dry out my hair too much so I switched back. Always looking for new ideas though!

  13. Love this post! I use less and less products each year as I find alternatives. I've given up all makeup (except mascara). I've also started pigtail braiding my hair most days. Most people think it's b/c of the Native American blood in my heritage, which is part of it, but mostly, it keeps it out of my face, off the back of my neck, it takes mere minutes, and uses NO PRODUCTS. And honestly, I get more feedback now than I did when I used products and makeup etc!!

  14. Elisha: I'll definitely be sharing lots of fun alternatives to traditional shampoos. I didn't stick with vinegar or baking soda either, I switch things up.

  15. Trish: I feel the same way, I feel more confident and get more positive feedback without the product or makeup.

  16. I had a roommate, once, that woke up way early to shower and "put her face on" before the rest of us woke up and saw her. She was a pretty girl-- not drop dead gorgeous, but pretty. Never saw her without make-up, until I woke up early one morning and I saw her just out of the shower. I swear-- I had no idea who she was and she was NOT pretty. Right on the spot, I vowed to never wear so much make-up that I didn't look like me anymore. Fast-forward to present day and I wear nothing-- no make-up, just chapstick in the winter time. Deodorant only when I know I'm going out and I'll be sweaty. My husband says I'm beautiful and I look in the mirror and know exactly what I look like.

You, by the way, look gorgeous! :o)

  17. Jenny: Aw, thanks Jenny! ;p I feel you there, I don't have to worry about people gasping in horror when they see the "Real me" if I rock the real thing.

I have met people that look completely different without the make-up...
