Giveaway! Let's Play a Game: What is This Groovy Mushroom Thing?

I found another Mystery Mushroom Item! The last time I asked you to guess what a vintage item was, we decided it was a vintage recipe card holder. (I sold that item recently and was told it's now in a Tween's bedroom, aw!) This time I have another groovy and mysterious mushroom...thing.

This item is in the Merry Mushrooms style, but I've never seen anything like it! The pesto-bismal pink color makes it stand-out, I've never found a vintage item in this hue. It jumped out at me when I was hunting on Labor Day and demanded me to buy it. It shouted distinctly, its refined voice carrying all the "subtlety" of Samuel L. Jackson, Dolemite, and Shaft. How could I refuse such an amazing mushroom laden thing?

There are so many Mushrooms on this find. The whole proverbial pot is shaped like a mushroom. The proverbial cherry on top is a mushroom! There is a mushroom printed on the plate and on the front. The item is big, think casserole dish or soup tureen big.

Here are my guesses on this mystery item:

  • Someone's homemade casserole pot
  • Or a casserole pot produced by some line
  • Perhaps a cookie jar, perched upon a pretty plate
  • Another psychedelic hallucination? (Am I Real? Are You? Faaar out...)
  • Someone's mod nightmare made reality with black magic (I LOVE this item. My mom would vomit at the sight of it. Not everyone loves a good tacky mushroom like we do!)

Can You Identify this Mod Mushroom? + Random Prize

So tell me in the comments, what do you think this vintage mushroom pot is? Do you already know? Are you laughing at my lack of knowledge? Is there a line of these brazen pink mushroom pots out there that I've never heard of?

I will select a random commenter a week from now, and I will send them a surprise in the mail. (The surprise is small, hand-crafted, and mushroom related!) I'll e-mail the winner so leave your email in the comments, and I will announce the winner (and reveal the identity of the mystery prize) via the Thrift Core Facebook page.

  1. Whatever it is, it looks amazing! I'd say it probably is for soup, the lid will keep it hot, while you can put some bread for dipping on the plate. Just my guess of course;)

  2. Gravy boat or soup tureen, depending on size. (If it's smaller, it's a gravy boat; if larger, a tureen.)

  3. how big is it? I think it looks like a sugar jar... and yeah probably from a collection, but maybe painted a different color by it's former owner?

  4. I thought a gravy boat when I saw it but then am not sure what size it is,I know someone who loves mushie related things.I have started collecting them for her (she doesnt know yet tho)

  5. I think it's a soup tureen! The plate is to protect the table from spills and heat damage. Aww, I think it's cute. Poor pepto-pink-mushroom-thingy. :-D

  6. Depending on how big it is, it looks like a sugar bowl or a soup tureen to me! There are a few 1970's Sears soup tureens listed on Ebay that are very similar, but no pink ones!

  7. UGLY, that's what this is!! This is a soup tureen and is a 'homemade' ceramic project. It should have been painted natural in tones of brown & orange. My mother made a whole set of this style years ago.

  8. I meant to add the size, sorry about that my friends. It's BIG. That's why my guess was casserole dish.

  9. Charlotte: I love you :) And your honest opinion. My mom exclaimed the same thing and made a "gag" noise. Thank you for identifying the object!

  10. LOL can you imagine a nice say pumpkin soup in that? The orange against the pink? Its seriously kind of making me sick, the visual. Other than that...if you did like a succulent garden with some funky purples or something it might be pretty freakin cool!

  11. Dhamma: Oooooh snap, you're a genius. I think I HAVE to do that now!

  12. My guess is a sugar jar and the creamer pot is missing. Usually the sugar jars have two handles and the creamers have one. So cute!! I love the color! Maybe some kind of ceramic project. My Mom was huge into ceramics when I was little.

  13. Well originally I thought this was a sugar bowl...but maybe it could be a storage pot for tea bags...? Ah who knows!?

  15. There's no lip for a spoon to rest on this jar. I don't have the measurements but remember guys, it's BIG! Think the size of a big casserole pot or cookie jar.

I think the homemade and home-painted ceramic soup tureeen suggestion is the best bet, that's what makes the most sense when I look at it. Keep up with your suggestions, though. Each entry qualifies you for the giveaway :)

  16. I think it's one of those dishes that you serve soup in, a soup tureen. All is needs is a big (purple) ladle and you're good to go :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh, I love the purple ladle suggestion. I'm seriously going to make delicious mushroom soup and serve it to my friends out from this thing. We'll laugh 'til the tears make our soup too salty!

  18. Looks so pretty it reminds of of something to do in a tea party maybe you can use it to put sugar? or cookies?

  19. Ummm, Van? You may not want to serve food outta this! It's definetly a 'home'made ceramics project- I made a set of horrible canisters similar to this back in the early 80's. The glaze may / may not be food safe...? The glazes back then had a huge amount of lead in them. Definetly a casserole dish/tureen (gone horribly wrong!!) :P lfcrossman@hotmail.com

  20. I seen a set of canisters that were similar colours a few months ago. Left them, just not for me.

    & Lori - that's good to know!

  21. Sorry, pink mushroom canisters... looked exactly like Merry Mushroom set.

  22. I don't know what it is - but I do know that when I die, I want my ashes kept in this thing.

  24. Lori: Thank you for the data! Succulent planter it is. The thing's really grown on me at the house, I have it on my computer desk right now.

  25. I used to do ceramics back in the 80's and made lots of mushroom related items. One was a soup tureen very similar to this but I used more natural colors. I used mine as a serving bowl for soups and stews. And the platter was good for serving meat. Thanks.

  26. DeeAnn, yours was probably very pretty. I love knowing the history behind this thing.

Can I line the inside with saran wrap so I can have a mad tea party and serve mushroom soup to guests? I'm falling in love with the idea...

  27. I don't really know, but I suspect that this is from one of those "paint your own pottery" places, which would account for the odd color choice. As for what it is for, I'm guessing sugar cubes...? Could it be that the pot and saucer are two seperate items, painted at the same time but not meant to be stacked?

    Love your blog! ElizWalker@aol.com

  29. I originally thought it was a sugar bowl or butter crock but based on the size I would have to say Soup Tureen also.

  30. It is actually for Mushroom Gravy. The lid kept the gravy hot and it is pink because it was in a house with a lot of women.

  34. Looks to me like a cookie jar, but then it wouldn't make sense to have the saucer underneath. Depending on how big it is, it may just be a decorative serving dish.

  35. Oh my goodness! i love this so much!(haha) I have a set of mushroom canisters and salt and pepper shakers this would go PERFECT with!
I think a cookie jar is a good guess...Also, since it has a saucer under it, maybe it's for holding tea bags? or sugar?

  39. Your lovely big mushroom would be for soup - I am curious does it have a stamp on the bottom that says JAPAN? I collect Japan wear and this is just the kind of thing that would have come out of Japan in the 60's :) Pretty cute, great find, enjoy your mushroom soup in style girl!
