Thrift Haul: Playful Finds From the Flea Market

I get these two questions frequently: What's your thrifting method? and What are your favorite Jacksonville Thrift Haunts? Lately I've been hitting up the flea markets on Sunday mornings and afternoons, but I don't have a thrifting method. I thrift organically.

Sometimes I grab victims friends and attack the numerous thrifts on Beach Blvd, sometimes I haunt local yard sales. I only have time to thrift on the weekends and I can never make it to estate sales. My dumpster diving exploits are to a minimum due to lack of time and space. Although I do keep an eagle-like thrifter's eye on the curbsides for treasure at all times...

I'm working with friends to curate an Brick & Mortar shop, so my organic hunts will change. I'll need to check Craigslist and ads for vintage, and attend auctions to get the best deals. But for now, keeping it simple, staying positive on the hunt, and following my instincts and my heart while I'm out "on the field" works for now. How do you hunt? And...

What did you find on the hunt this weekend?

  1. I don't think I have a 'method' but I do go hunt early we say "al que madruga dios lo ayuda" = something like if you wake up early god will help you and I do believe that early birds are more successfu, anyhow my jackpot of the week was a 70's nikon from japan which I'm still drooling over

  2. Very true, get there early, and you better your chance of scoring. With my busy schedule it's hard to do that, but I make out well even when I'm not early...

  3. No method to my madness. Once I'm off the subway though, I haul ass across the parking lot since it's all about timing! I'm out there 3-6 times a week at sometimes 10 different shops.

I bought some Pyrex & a fantastic Federal bowl, that's all this weekend. Wasn't a big thrifting weekend. Hopefully tomorrow will be better!

  4. I used to be all manic about it and had to be number one in line. But my mentor way back in the day, always said if it was meant to be she'd find it. And truly it seems to work for me now. I do chill and still find lots of stuff. The only thing I do get there on time is Goodwill's dollar day. More than anything you just need to get a schedule and stick to it. BTW you are so cute! Love your style and your smile is simply gorgeous. :)

  7. I try to hit my local thrift stores twice a week--my kids complain but enjoy it!
I found snow pants and mini plastic jack o' lanterns for decorating!

  8. Laura: I should start coming up with a schedule to hit the thrifts based on when they add stock, hmm... :)

  9. I can't imagine looking for a method for treasure hunting. Besides look for the item that you are proud to have and keep.

  10. No method here either.I have so much stuff to list, I have gotten very picky, but when items sell, I feel my juices flowing and want to go to some of my favorite 'junk' stores. On Wed and Thurs is senior day at the Goodwill, yeah 20% off, and I usually find some great vintage clothing in their Halloween section, go figure! When I get serious I check Craigslist for 'vintage' weekend yard sales and estate sales and map my route.

I once found a film tin like that full of old buttons at the Goodwill savage yard, love that place, but it is in the next town and when I go I spend hours digging through bins as I'm waiting for them to wheel the next bin out.

    Love that dress on you!

  12. Birdie: Yep! But as a business person or a reseller, you have to take your hunt seriously as well at times.

Alyssa: Yep! I'm quite comfortable in dresses, wear 'em pretty much everywhere. Love that you mentioned it looks 70s, I'm going for a 70s style lately...post on that is coming ;)
