Thrift Haul: Sleek Mod Treasure Trove

I hosted a successful yard sale this Saturday, so on Sunday I celebrated by....bringing home even more stock!? Don't worry, I held back and continued to leave behind many treasures, succeeding in only bringing home special items.

I've never seen anything quit like this vintage coat adorned with playful siamese cats. I love their animated poses and the coat is super soft. My kitty Yuko seems to approve. I'll have to photograph myself wearing the pretty dress under the cat coat soon, I love it!

Some groovy mushroom art for your walls! By the way, a lot of people e-mail me asking to buy finds they see in these posts. Yep, they're all for sale. I may even sell you things you see in my house. Just send an e-mail.

I plan to clean-up and rewrite this gorgeous mod lamp. Worth the effort for the $1.00 I paid for it! I can't wait to display it in the shop, next to a pile of records, atop a shag carpet? :)

A lovely pair of dansk candle holders. I have three of these now, I love the atomic-style shape!

I'm half-tempted to keep this beautiful mod table. It fits right in with my couch and living room decor.

Who could resist this fun novelty ashtray?

Another bar novelty find. You put a liquor bottle on top and the liquor is dispensed into a cup below. A "functional" adult toy, and it looks nice sitting atop the bar.

The oldest vintage swimsuit I've ever come across. This one looks like it's from the 40s or 50s? I couldn't resist trying it on, it might look a little funny but it's actually adorable to wear.

Cold weather has arrived here in Florida. Yes, we consider it cold here even if it doesn't snow! I only had one pair of jeans, but the flea market fixed that. Then I saw a pretty brown dress and couldn't resist. I like summer and summer clothes much better...

A quirky kokeshi to go with my growing collection, now eight strong. Speaking of Kokeshi, it looks like I'm officially leaving for Japan on November 25th and I'll be there for two weeks! Is there any content in particular you'd like me to write while I'm there? Let me know in the comments!

What did you find this weekend?

  1. oh that mushroom art is my favourite! and i just bought a very similar table (it was longer, elongated, only one level but same shaped legs that twist on). it was $5 and i'll be refinishing it. it's perfect, minimal, mod and lovely. i vote you keep yours!

  3. Super cool lamp and the cat print coat looks sweet. Wow, Japan, have a most glorious time, check out the vintage and take lots of pictures.

I would personally be interested in some of the interesting street fashion the young folks are into over there.

  5. Victoria: I guess I'll be sharing plenty of pictures. It'll be daunting to sort through the hundreds I'll inevitably capture...

A La Modern: Uh oh, looks like the table is here to stay. Maybe I'll sell another one in this house to make up for it ;)

  6. Love the swimsuit! I have a vintage-inspired one that is a very similar style that I bought new a couple of years ago. Wish I could have found an authentically vintage one instead. That style is so flattering... I like that it's modest but still really feminine.

  7. ok.i love everything you found! love the swimsuit, the lamp, the mushroom art, the end table - even that hilarious ash tray. LOL! i tried on a vintage swimsuit the other day at a thrift shop but someone had done alterations to it so it didn't fit and at $10, i decided to leave it behind. i love your kokeshi doll too - i used to have a whole family of korean dolls like that which makes me think i need to go searching on mom's attic... so when you're in japan, i'd be very curious to know if there's any kind of thrifting culture there at all. why are you going?

  8. Trish: Most vintage suits from that era are so figure-flattering. I love 'em :)

Angelika: From my research thrift stores in Japan are trendier with higher priced items. I will investigate while I'm there first-hand, of course! :D

I'm going to Japan to visit a friend I've known since middle school. He's stationed in Okinawa and knows I'm a Japanophile, so he promised to show me the sights.

  9. You always find the coolest things, I had no idea one could actually buy them from here, thank you for making that clear. Oh! and if you are going to Japan for God's sake, you have to talk about the food, the fashion and the cute characters that are part of their everyday lives. Make sure you talk about Lolita, Mori Girl and Dolly kei in specific. I'd LOVE to see anything about it. Oh God It's not me going and I'm all excited for you to come back with such cool material for the blog. HOW COOL! Have a nice week.

  11. Yadira: Thank you for the feedback! I'll be there for two whole weeks documenting plenty! I wonder if I should go day-by-day with new updates or wrap it all up into a couple of posts... ;)

  12. Miss Lou: Same here ;) That's why I hate shopping for them and enjoying buying dresses and skirts instead. Stretchy-jeans are out friends!

  14. Chelsea: So many people try to sneak her out of my house ;) They'd bring her back. She's pretty, but she's a mischievous little thing.

  15. I'd LOVE to see a day-by-day, I'd look forward to that every single day and I'd be chewing my nails until the next post because I'm in love with Japan. But you only need to think about your readers, if you think they would enjoy a 2 week tour through Japan then definitely do it. If you think it'd be too much then wrap it all up into a few posts. You could do one about the food, another about the thrifty culture if you go to thrifty places (this one is absolutely necessary), definitely one about the fashion, remember they are into some fashions that are all about vintage and re-purposed items. Another about all the monuments and places of interest. I don't know, I'm already rambling, sorry. Conclusion: Think of your readers and pretty please take MANY pictures of everything. If you decide not to publish them all here, you could upload them to some site such as Flickr so I can see them and drool. LOL Have an awesome week!
