What's in my Bag: A Peek at the Life of a Busy Bohemian

When I realized I had records in my bag I thought it would be fun to analyze its crazy contents! This is what ends up in my purse after a busy week of networking, thrifting, photo gigs, and art shows. Picture taken the day after Downtown's Art Walk.

1) Screen printed bag from a Japanese art museum. 2) My bro gave me records. One has songs from a favorite record, Off The Wall! 3) I always bring a composition book. I constantly record ideas. 4) Pen and pencil  for the idea lovemaking!

5) SLR Battery Charger; zee camera is always by my side. 6) Beloved Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lens 7) A dab of hot pink lip gloss is the only makeup I wear these days. I've had this for at least 6 years. Likely breeding a mutant strain of bacteria in there.

8) Cute Sunglasses 9) Always need cash for random thrift or flea stops! Or art. 10) Wallet! Yep, credit and business cards fit within. 11) Gum case featuring a cute kokeshi doll. Always loaded with my favorite gum. 12) I call him Change Fish! Hosts my flea market change.

13) Tiny hair ties for when I feel like braiding my hair. 14) I'm always exchanging business cards. 15) Remember my envelope savings system? 16) Squint and you'll see a tiny toy knife from my nephew and a "Fuck" button from a friend in Vegas! :)

Bonus: Peek in my bag when I was a writer working in a cubicle for The Man.

So there you have it, the tools of the trade of one quirky bohemian. What's in your bag? Bring anything special with you to the thrifts?

  1. I always keep a tape measure, so when I'm lazy I don't have to try stuff on, or to get an exact size of vintage clothes. Also, A MAGNET! It's how to spot jewelry that isn't pure silver, alloys stick to magnets and REAL jewelry doesn't (my mom taught me that and keep a magnet on her keychain).

    Great post and happy thrifting!

    1. Ah, good suggestions! I usually keep a measuring tape to see if furniture will fit in my home or car, but I left it out that day.

The Magnet is a good choice!

  5. This is brilliant, I love that you had a couple of records just hanging out in there.. my bag is much messier than this and currently houses a pair of wellington boots to keep my toes safe from the snow, ear muffs to keep my ears safe from the wind and dry shampoo because I was too lazy to wash my hair in the shower last night

If you're interested I did a 'what's in my bag' post recently which can be found here: http://charlottesweb-blog.blogspot.com/2012/01/whats-in-my-bag.html

    1. Haha, my brother gave me the records and I forgot to take them out of the bag. I love how the difference in regions determines bag contents. It's hot here so a Floridian would have an extra pair of flip flops to change into when the weather gets warmer in the afternoon. :)

  6. Love it! I did a "what's in my bag" post a long time ago, but I need to do a new one.

P.S. I love the "Fuck" button!

  7. Aaaawww this is SO cool! I obviously love the records but everything in your purse is really awesome. I too seem to hoard lip glosses from different eras LOL. I have a Canon that I love too but mine is nothing fancy, I do most of my tricks on Photoshop.

    1. A point and shoot will work just fine for blogging and product photo needs, I used one for years and no one knew any better ;)

  8. I'm a new blogger and reader- love your blog.
You have cool stuff in your bag! I think people may be disgusted if I showed them what's in my bag right now. Lots of crumbs from the granola bar that fell apart and tons of little notes with ideas that pop in my head while commuting. Based on my last thrift I need to bring allergy medicine and a mask- doggy smelling estate sale.

    1. I am sometimes tempted to bring a mask and gloves for the super dirty thrift hunts...but I just dig in and get filthy then wash up later :)

Thanks for the compliment on the blog!

    1. Sometimes I want a fanny pack or small back pack for thrifting, it would be more convenient and I could tote water and snacks... hmmm...

I love the sunglasses too, a gift from a friend! :)

    1. Thank you! There are four things of Japanese origin in that bag, including the bag and change fish. There's usually even more... ;)

  11. Oh God, I'm such a bag lady. I can never use cute little clutches or teeny, tiny purses because they would never fit half of what I need. 1) Wallet/keys/phone 2)Makeup bag with the on-the go essentials. 3)Mini fold-up brush with mirror 4) Book 5) i-Pod, 6) Day Planner 7) Pens 8) Mini notebook 9)Mints/gum 10) Business cards 11) The occasional camera 12) Miscellaneous junk.

This is pretty much why I stick to messenger bags on any given day. There's just too much stuff!

    1. I'm always looking for ways to reduce instead of expand, but random craft supplies, tags, and items to resell like the records end up in my bag along the way. I used to carry my planner with me but with my composition book it felt redundant and added too much weight.

  12. I got scolded by the Salvation Army employees for taking shots with my Canon so I definitely do not bring it there but other than that it's bever far from me. Very similar to what I carry around with the exception of the 45's, lol. :D
