Quick and Thrifty Bedroom/Bathroom Colorful Art Remix

It's been eight months since I shared the first peek at my huge, sunny new 2 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment in Riverside, Jacksonville. I finally got the reseller mess (oh the boxes, they were everywhere!) under control but I'm still setting in and making the space a home.

Today I'm sharing a look into a space you haven't seen, the master bathroom, and showing how hanging a few thrifted things I had around made a space more cozy and inspiring:

After I cleared out the final boxes to be organized (any other apartment dwelling resellers forced to use your poor bedrooms as storage?) I had to tackle the bedroom and attached bathroom which felt empty, imbalanced, and soulless.

Left: My nightstand, Right: A Wall in the Master Bathroom

Displaying art I've collected from thrifting, local art shows, and comic book conventions that were languishing (!) in the closet gave the spaces the personable, cozy, relaxing vibe they needed.

The bathroom feels much more comfortable with eclectic art pieces displayed on the walls, too. The Italian Little Mermaid Poster is a childhood relic...

And pieces like the Audrey II on the left and small fish paintings on Canvas on the right are from artist friends. Thrifted Plaques and art from sandy beach artists around the world are on display, too.

This is the biggest apartment I've occupied and I don't have enough furniture to make it feel cozy, but filling the tall walls with eclectic collections is helping to fill the gaps. I hope I'll encounter some chairs and couches while thrifitng to fill some voids as well!

In the past I'd have been tempted to hit retail stores to fill unattractive white space in my home, as many people do. After two years of buying nothing but essentials new, I'm patient. I wait for the right pieces to come to me and use what I have on hand to create a space that's uniquely me!

What do you use to decorate your home? I like to use record cases (I have Prince, Michael Jackson, and Jackson 5 ones on the walls!), and thrifted collections...

    1. I recall you saying that before methinks? I'm willing to sell it if you're interested :) Just e-mail me at info@thriftcore.com. I like to switch things up and I've been selling a lot of the vintage pieces I've been holding on to.

And you have some lovely art work there.
I'm actually moving into an appartment twice the size of my current home. Needless to say I'll be doing some serious furniture shopping as well. Hopefully secondhand!

  4. I love the way you've got it all arranged.
I've got lots of art around here too.Between my dad's paintings from art school and some of the thrifted pieces I've found, my walls are filling up.
My favorite art has to be the paintings and drawings that my kids have done over the years.Years ago,I was going through a big box of their artwork and decided to take the best pieces, frame them using thrifted mats and frames, and throw the rest away.Best decision ever! Some of them are holiday related(like paintings of pumpkins, turkeys, or Christmas trees)so I keep them with the decorations and pull them out at the right time of year.

    1. I love framing and crafting with kid's art, their perspective is honest and hilarious. I love a home filled with real history like family heirlooms and unique art pieces rather than ones you can buy from Target or Walmart.

  5. Your place looks so cool! Nice job. You name it, and it's probably on one of my walls-- plates, art, photography, old photos, kids' art, trivets, needlework, Chinese checkers boards...

    1. I painted it. :) My mom originally found it at a thrift store and let me have it when I moved out years ago.

  7. Funny; you write about adding art to your walls, and I write about removing art from my walls to free up wall space! I WANT TO COME VISIT!!!

    1. I didn't have this problem at smaller, older apartments. It's a blessing! I used to always acquire lots of stuff but now that I'm downsizing and not buying anymore it's more challenging to fill the space. I'd LOVE for your to visit. :D I need to hang some shelves and display some of your monsters, that'll fill some space.

    2. Oh, and I love how including homemade arts and crafts/stuff by friends ensures you have stuff on the walls that no one else will.

  9. In that we have an inventory of 150 pieces of art rescued from thrifts for our website business, we have many "friends" that stick around our house for a while until they are sold.

My favorite way to hang art is to put it in a place where I want visitors' eyes to go. Like, the too-big stairwell. We put a large watercolor by Ralph Didriksen high on the wall to attract eyes to this empty area. Looking at the piece asks them to experience the room as extending out over the stairs.

    1. That's a good idea, Rodney. I try top always think about the placement and balance when I go on a hanging binge. There's plenty for art friends to inhabit until they find their home around here!
