Raw Vegan Hummus Recipe: Flavorful, Easy, Delicious, and Nutritious

Hummus is a vegan staple, but raw vegans can't indulge in the deliciousness as the main ingredient, chickpeas, is cooked. Fortunately, there's an endless array of similar dips to play with. This is another amazingly delicious recipe from Handmade in the Present Moment The Present Moment's (best. resturant. ever!) cookbook. I like this hummus recipe even more than the non-raw chickpea hummus I used to make!

Ingredients: 3 cups raw cashews, soaked 1-2 hours, 1/2 cup lemon juice, 1/2 cup filtered water, 1/4 cup tahini, 1/4 cup olive oil, 7 cloves garlic, 1 1/2 tbsp cumin powder, 1 tsp salt

Directions:

1) drain and rinse cashews well after they've soaked for at least 1-2 hours
2) Blend all ingredients in your blender, preferably a Vitamix, until smooth and creamy.
3) Serve garnished with a sprinkle of paprika if desired.

This is the most delicious hummus I've ever had! It's incredibly rich and creamy, perfectly spiced. I love to serve it with fresh cucumber, bell peppers, and carrots. The raw vegan flax seed crackers pictured are made by Shakti a raw vegan caterer I work for part time. You can buy their food at Grassroots, Native Sun, and European Street locally.

What are your favorite quick-and-healthy snacks? I like quick fruit smoothies, dips for veggies, and pâtés. I'll be sharing more of these favorite recipes soon!

  3. Blended roasted cashews sounds.so.good!
Usually do home made hummus with chickpeas but I might have to try this! I'd imagine it's a little more fatty and higher calorie but it sounds delicious! Sometimes cashews bother my tummy a bit but that seriously sounds so yummy!

    1. This is made with raw ones for health reasons (oops, I'll edit the post to specify) but it's delicious with the roasted variety, too :) Have you tried using the raw ones? Soaking raw nuts before preparation should help you digest. Soaking since removes enzyme inhibitors that keep the nut from germinating.

In short, trrrry it, you'll love it.

  4. I've been reading your blog for close to year now and I'm loving that you are including recipes! Have you tried a mock tuna pâté? It's made with soaked walnuts, celery, and onions. Sooo good!

    1. Yes, we make something similar at work. It's soooo delicious! We make it with sunflower seeds and I think some dill and lemon juice too.

  5. Since I started eating vegan, I have been ADDICTED to hummus, it's my go-to in-between snack (in moderation, obviously, but it's funny how I never get tired of it). I've tried the chickpea variety (natch), the soybean variety from Nasoya, and now I'm excited to try your cashew-based version. SO NEAT! I also want to do a mock tuna pâté like your commentor mentioned. Keep the yummy recipes comin', lady! :)

  7. Oh wowzers this sounds yum. I'm not a vegan or vegetarian but I do find myself cooking more these options. I can only imagine that this hummus recipe is moorish. I must try I think, I've tried several "raw" food recipes recently and they are super yum too.

  10. Don't know if this is raw or "healthy," but I attended a birthday celebration recently, and one of the guests brought an olive tapenade that we ate with sesame seed crackers. The lady had celiac disease and was on a gluten-free diet. The tapenade was not only delicious, but addictive. Everyone loved it.

    1. Sounds deeeelish. We make the sesame seed crackers at the kitchen. What initially attracted me to raw vegan food was flavor and ease for clean-up/preperation, it's such a nice bonus that it's also full of nutrients. :)
