Thrift Haul: Yard Sale Hunting for Treasure

This weekend I encountered an enchanted yard sale. Junk was piled, bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. Piles of grimy junk spread as far as the eye can see. I came home with the haul pictured above (Leaving other fun finds, like a giant stack of Playboys, behind.)

The teapot, globe book end, and two oriental planters were 50 cents each from a yard sale next to my apartment. The rest was picked up for the sprawling yard sale I described.

I bought the owls, Japanese bunny bowls, small dinosaur, 60s yellow planter, little casita, 60s mushroom set, and a couple of other things for $7.00 total. I love yard sales, they are one of my favorite second-hand shopping resources. Thrift store prices are rising, but yard sales keep giving me the goods for cheap.

What did you find this weekend?

  1. I probably would have gotten the stack of Playboys too. Some of those older copies sell pretty good on Ebay!

  2. Nice finds with the owls and other stuff - I have to agree that the thrifts have gotten more expensive over the years. I'd favored them over yard/estate sales, but have been switching it up more frequently to try get lower prices.

  3. No yard sales in my neck of the woods yet (I live in the country in the still-wintery PNW) but I am definitely looking forward to the season starting. My thrift store luck has dwindled recently - I hope it's because people are plotting their mega yard sales with their extra stuff!

  4. I forgot to add that they were modern, not vintage Playboy magazines. Or they would be mine, and treasured forever :) I love vintage pinups.

  9. I still haven't advanced to garage or estate sales but I rarely pay over .99 for any item at Goodwill or the thrift stores I frequent - keeps the hunt challenging for me - and saves me money. I REALLLY want to start going though but I have to learn how to sell online better first because I have too much already haha. Thanks for sharing...

  10. that "little cassita" (which i'm assuming is the 3D wall hanging of a room) is a blast from my past. my parents had two like that from Brazil... now i wonder whatever happened to them? i visited a little thrift shop in my neighbourhood that i don't see often and found a leather belt. but the best thing that happened was that i went thrifting with a friend whose son is getting married in april and we found a mother-of-the-bride dress for $8. sweet...

  11. Angelika:

My mom and I collect the Hispanic mini 3D wall hangings you recall from your past. She has a few from Mexico, and I provide her with more every time I find them. I'm completely enchanted by them. (I'm half Mexican/Half Puerto Rican, they remind me of the tropical, colorful habitat where my extended family lives.)

I think this one will mark the beginning of a casita collection of my own...

  12. I really like the 3D wall hanging. That's sweet. Love the brown pitcher and 'shrooms S&P shakers. Too cute. I'm into the brown dishes and such. I have several Hull and McCoy brown pieces. Great treasures! Thanks for sharing.

  15. So many goodies! And seriously, yard sales are the new thrifts. Because Goodwill is looking more like Ross nowadays. I saw shoes for $30 and cameras for $40. Grr.
