Antique Store Wisdom: Rebranding Progress. Sexy New Price Tags!

One of my big resolutions for 2012 was to work on branding my antique store booth Thrift Core style. I've made new merchandise, signage, and now these sleek new price tags. They're a big improvement on my plain white tags (seen here) from before and suit my colorful, kitchsy aesthetic.

The details really matter with your small business. I'm anxious to see if sales will increase from this small change, but even if they don't, I've been having fun choosing the right tag for each vintage item. The new price tags really help bring the whole picture I'm trying to paint together!

Resellers, speak up, what do you use to tag items? Buyers, what kind of details make you reach for an item while shopping for vintage or in a boutique?

  1. Hey Van...we use the old fashioned manilla string tags and I bought a variety pack of stamps...nothing fancy, but it sparks them up a bit. I'm also going to be doing some shelf tags using the bigger manilla string tags and folding the bottom over to make them stand up and writing some info on them to inspire some curiosity on particular items to see if that helps to perk up some sales.

    1. I used plain white string tags that I stamped with cute owl and boat stamps. I'm working on making stand-up signs of many kinds to help perk up sales, too!

The new ones are printed on colorful card stock paper and cute out with an x-acto knife.

  2. Those are really cute! On my crochet wear I used to cut tags out of colored paper and hang them from a piece of yarn that I tied through a hole I made with a fun-shaped craft punch:)

My bookmarks are so small though, that I put them in ziplocks first and then staple paper with my logo and website over the top. I love that it looks fun yet professional:)

    1. I love packing little bits of small ticker merchandise that way. :) I need to work on some bookmarks...they're fun!

  3. Hi! Love following your blog. Which flea markets do you frequent? I go to the Ramona one but never spot any vintage stuff. :(

    2. Everything in this photo is from Ramona. You have to keep going back and hunting hard!

  4. I am really enjoying reading your blog. As a fellow thrifter & lover of vintage I am often quite jealous of the flea markets you are able to frequent (and the finds you discover)! The tags are very sweet and I for one would notice them drawing me into your booth to take a peek. Well done.

    1. Thank you! I was hoping they had that affect ;)

  5. I use plain white tags. Sometimes I punch out tag shapes or circles from index cards if I need a bigger size. I guess it's a variety. Works for now, since my booth is more like a yard sale than anything with a cohesive theme...so far!!

    1. I've been slowly streamlining the look, though the general theme is mod-colorful-kitschy. I like to use a bigger tag at times to draw attention to special items, too.

I like the eclectic booths with tags made from vintage cards, they draw me in.

  6. Great array of tags. I sell on line so I just enclose a thank you card with a business card and 20% off next purchase coupon. When I did have a brick and mortar store we had the whole store so we just used price stickers or white tags.

    1. I wonder how we'll price when the brick and mortar is open, hmmm... I've been considering making special tags with info on each item and including a business card with each purchase to make it special, but I'm not at that stage yet...

  8. My fave is the antlers--haha! Dig it!

How is your little space going--the one with the pink mushroom canisters? I love the way you had your shelves done; it looked adorable. I would definitely be drawn to your booth!

Do you feel that you are profiting and moving ahead already, or still working foundationally? I know how much work this is. Dangit girl, you gots to get your sleep on! HAHA!

    1. I've made my rent back at Treasure House last I checked, but not making as much as I'd want. I spent all day today making tons of "smalls ticket merch" - the bread and butter in the handmade business, to see if sales pick up.

Hmm...I usually double to triple my rent in the antique stores amount, but consider myself still building up the foundation with all of my reselling efforts.

I definitely need to schedule more time for sleep, you're not as productive when you're zombified and sleepy...

  10. Your tags look great! I use bright yellow string tags that I purchase from Staples. They're not as special as yours but everyone else in the antique mall I'm in pretty much does white tags so I thought I be a little different. I've had a few people ask me where I get my tags but I have yet to see any other yellow tags being used in the antique mall.

I'm liking your handmade tags and maybe I should give them some more consideration in my tagging now.

    1. I saw these circle tags at staples surrounded by metal in staples. They cost a little more than some others, but when I saw someone using them in the antique store it really helped their items stand out! It looked so good with the vintage items.

  11. Hi Van,

I love your new tags! I use the round tags with the metal trim...I wonder if mine were the ones you saw? My husband has a source for them, so I take all I can get!! I love them!!

Also, I think I saw you today, during the rain at the drive in...I was trying to rush and wasn't feeling a 100%....or I would have said HI! (I was the girl with the market basket you commented on.) I appreciated the comment. I love it too! I just picked it up a few weeks back at a sale in Green Cove Springs.

BTW, I will be moving back to your corner at Southern Crossings in March...I am going a little bigger with my booth. Excited but scared at the same time.

    1. Ah ha! If that's your booth it looks AMAZING! You sell the best vintage and have excellent staging. I did well at that back booth, you'll love having more space.

You should have said "hi!" I almost bought the same exact basket in perfect shape in the covered area but the vendor couldn't part with it. ;)

  12. Thanks Van!! I am going today to move some things around and consider marking down a few pieces. I am holding some really cool items back for my "grand re-opening" in March. It's hard for me not to put the new stuff out, but I am going to be patient and wait.

Thanks for the compliment on the "staging" that's my favorite part!! I love it! I was contacted by another dealer about putting my vintage in her store (a little bit more of a high-end location) but her conditions were that I would drop off my pieces and she would display them. I kindly say "no thanks."

If I see another basket like my "Peterson's" basket I will pick it up for you.

    Take care!!

    1. That's awesome that you were contacted about putting your vintage in another shop- that's how you know you're doing it right. I'll have to visit and drink in your staging some more!
