MODify Living Room Makeover Phase 1: Thrift Wish List for a Fresh New Living Room

Challenge time: I continue to minimize my possessions to the bare minimum and the pad is feeling quite empty and imbalanced. My apartment doubles as a workspace/background for product and editorial photography so I always try to keep it as balanced as possible. I'm challenging myself to refill and balance the space using only what I have on hand or what I can get for free or close to it!

This is Phase 1 of my living room revamp, it's not done, not even close, but I wanted to inspire any new Buy Nothing New folks. If you're patient, the stuff you seek will sometimes come to you! I also intend to make some new pieces from scratch. The living room before above isn't too bad but the "free" non-mod couch clashing bothered me and the gallery wall hastily assembled without a lot of balance or context.

The first step was installing these "invisible shelves" I got for free from an artist's yard sale! These were literally on my "want", so fun to find exactly what you were looking for at an impossible to beat "price". These are perfect for me to re-arrange still lives when the whim suits me, for editorial photos and to stage an objects I'm selling in my Etsy shop "in the wild".

This is merely the beginning. I'd love to find a clean, modern, glass display case for all of my toys/collections to shine and/or maybe some more cube shelves to match two others in the same space. My eyes will be peeled! I'll continue to share progress on crafts I make and things I find to transform this space.

I'm looking for equivalents of these guys while I'm hunting, if I don't find them I'll have to make them.

1) IKEA Expedit Unit
2) Flotaki Rug (a white shag rug would hide my cat's fur, ha!)
3) IKEA NYTTJA Frame - cheap, too. Always need these.
4) Take Your Turntable If I don't find a new record player I may sell my records.
5) Danish Modern Cado System from my DREAM list. Would love a mod display unit. Or 2. Or 3.
6) STOCKHOLM Glass Just want this thing. Someone amazing, come make it for me!

How do you revamp you space when you need a change? I try my best to re-arrange what I have on-hand and wait for the good stuff to "find" me when I'm out and about.

  1. Rearranging is a great way to change-- it's even recommended for healthy living. No kidding! To really change, I like to paint, but I know that's not always possible-- I rented for many years. Of course if you don't mind painting, you can do what you want then paint it back to white or whatever when you move :)

    1. I'd love to paint but my walls are textured and the ceilings are crazy high. It would be a nightmare. I may eventually but I'd have to consider which walls, etc. Carefully. And enlist help. And painting back would be a nightmare, aah. I was tempted to paint the living room today.

  2. You should have no problem finding a turn table, I see them at thrifts often. Your place will look fantastic!

    1. I'll keep an eye out, I haven't been hunting much. Won't allow it until I get everything for sale in this house listed!

    1. Yes, I just don't like it for some reason. The room is super empty looking in the meantime.

  4. I went to a BBQ last night at a friend from work and realized I truly still am a minimalist based on all the stuff I see at other people's houses. I would love one of those style of record players as well - haven't found anything but huge ones.

    1. I had a huge one and sold it, was tired of looking at it/cleaning it and still on my minimalist kick...now I kind of regret it; miss listening to my Prince records. Now that I have Spotify I can listen to it all so it's not essential but it would be nice. :) And same for me when I visit some places. When I visit others (like my guy's bachelor pad) I feel like I have too much stuff...

  5. Number 6 was on my wish list as I was helping my sister put her pad together; I was hoping to find TWO for a similar price to your artist yard sale find!!! Good luck, it looks like you're off to a great start!

    1. That is awesome! There's no IKEA in my city so luck is slim but I'll keep hoping, or at least try to make something similar someday..when I have skills, haha.

  6. I've had my eye on the olive green record player too!! I need a smaller one to go my bedroom and I think it'll be perfect.

    1. Great minds think alike. Oh, I forgot to include a bigger photo of the whole living room and my desire for another lil' couch.
