Frugal Tips: Saving + Budgeting for Indie Business, Creative Entrepreneurs, and You!

Cutting costs and living frugally is an essential part of being a creative entrepreneur, or really, just living in general. You can't predict the future, it's essential to have money put away for emergencies. When you're a freelancer, there's up-and-downs, and having savings and an extremely low cost of living has bailed me out many times! I was going to write another post on how I keep expenses super-low (rent, transportation, and utilities is under $400 total) but as I was writing, I feel like I've covered nearly everything in a variety of posts throughout the year, so I'm sharing those instead!

I know keeping a low overhead allows me to be super flexible, I can take the freelance jobs I want and go to school. And really, life is fun this way! When you're frugal you're resourceful, and you learn useful new skills (baking bread, using tools, etc.) along the way. Besides, we should spend less on what we don't need, so we can spend more on fun stuff, like traveling, or business investments!

  1. You're so right about being frugal and budgeting. When I quit my job 3 years ago, the first thing I did was sell my car. I just couldn't justify the payment without the steady paycheck.
And we've been without cable/satellite TV for several years now. Netflix for us :)
We also only eat out on the weekends and always eat at home during the week.
And we're pretty simple people in general. We don't shop for things unless we need them. (most of the time)

    1. Same with us and Netflix. We cook nearly all of our meals and buy next to nothing. It forces you to use your resources wisely. I wouldn't have a car if I didn't need it (like if I lived in an Urban area with public transport) it can be such a money-pit.

  2. Wow! Your posts regarding budgeting are really quite impressive, Vanessa:) Thanks for sharing them. Like the commenter above, my family is also pretty frugal most of the time. We cancelled our cable earlier this year, cut down on phone bill by taking out most of the features, etc, etc. Every bit helps, right?

    1. It really does! Same here, basic phone, no cable, in a walkable area so no driving for the most part. Lots of little things that add up. :)

  3. I have an app that I use called Turbo Scan. It helps you keep track of your receipts. Oftentimes, receipts fade after only a short period of time. The app allows you to take a picture of the receipt, quickly crop and save it into different categories. I found out recently that the receipts that most businesses use are coated with BPA, which you probably know is a hormone disruptor. The less you touch the receipts the better. With this app you only have to touch it once when you scan it.

    1. Thanks for the tip! Yep, they do fade really quickly. I try to scan them before the end of the month but the ap sounds very practical.
