Should I Paint This Beautiful 1960s Retro Folding Chair? What Color? Let's Vote!

It's been a while since I've had to decide whether or not I should paint something I've bought into the homestead! I hit up some yard sales and forked out $5.00 for this sturdy 1960s chair. It fit the era/vibe I'm channeling for my new soap business and it's the perfect easy-to-pack chair for outdoor markets where I'll sell my products. Very sturdy, too, which is hard to come by.

Behind the chair + Under the seat

This is where you come in. I'm tempted to leave the patina alone and leave this chair as-is. But it would really pop with some color on the rusted metal parts.

Should I paint it, or keep it as is? Let me know in the comments! What color should I paint it?

I think a bright metallic spray paint would be interesting versus the flat bright yellow, orange or red I tend to default to for painting furniture...

    1. Decoupage the flowers? I'm keeping the 60s print because it would go with my market table, but do you mean decoupage the sides? What colors?

  3. I actually love it how it is now (I've got a rust fetish), but you could maybe wrap the metal with coloured thread and fabric scraps, I did that on an old chair a while ago, it looked lovely. You could do complimentary colours to go with the groovy floral fabric already there. P.S, your soap looks lovely!

    1. Thank you. I'll be re-shooting the whole product line with flowers/hippie-vibe stuff soon. There's a lot more we've done on the back-end that's not up yet :)

I like the texture, too. If anything I may try to match the bronze to keep it authentic, but colored thread is a cute idea to make the chair pop, too.

  4. I second the gray. It think it would go well with the other muted colors, and any others you already have in your merchandising setup. :)

  5. Definitely paint it = you live in Florida and that way you will preserve it from further rust as you intend to use it. Krylon is an awsome rust resistant paint (you can paint right over the rust too)

    1. Yes, the Florida heat is a biotch at these markets and for general preservation of anything. Thanks for the Krylon rec. I wasn't looking forward to sanding that so I'm willing to let the chair be an "test" of the truth of that! haha.

  6. I think a bright teal or aqua would look cool! But I'm not sure how it would look if you're leaving the flowers. Maybe just a clear coat :)

    1. Teal would be beautiful! Maybe this thing will end up having multiple colors, haha.

    1. Great minds think alike. That would be my usual go-to. Trying to force my thinking out of it, but I like it.

  8. I'm a rust lover. I would clear-coat it to protect it but otherwise leave it the beauty it already is!

    1. I do enjoy some rust, too :) Easiest option to keep it, haha.

  9. I don't mind it as is, but I kind of think It would pop more with a coat of paint. so I guess i'm team paint on this one. I think any of the more vibrant colors in the upholstery like teal, red, golden/yellow, hunter green would be really cute. Either way it's a cute chair, nice find!

  11. Another vote for paint. It might be a tricky shade to match, but I would try for that soft blue (large patches in the upper left hand and lower right hand corners). It's very close to gray and it's a very retro color altogether.

    1. That is a super pretty/retro hue and would make the chair pop.

  12. I'm torn between leaving it the wonderfully rusty texture that it is...or painting it a bright red-orange or even fuchsia color. Decisions, decisions!

    1. Flat red-orange or fuchsia are my furniture and general painting go-tos, haha. I love bright colors.

  13. I think you should paint the metal, too. I like the idea of the bright metallic, like copper or even some vivid orange, but the muted grey or blue sound like they would look great, too. What might bridge that gap between metallic and muted could be the Rustoleum Mirror-effect spray paint. It would certainly attract the eye!

    1. Hmm I'll look into that spray, that sounds like what I had in mind. Anything to draw the eye with a market booth is good!

  14. Team paint! If I had my way I'd paint everything teal, buuuut in this case, I think a really poppin' copper would be best with the print, since it is so muted. Metallic would give it some sass!

    1. Teal is my go-to for most things too, or saturated bright orange :) Maybe it's our love of beautiful teal springs. I'm thinking metallic is where I'm going for this one...
