My New Years Resolutions for 2015: Get Out, Community, Research. What Are Yours?

Ah, I remember the flurry and excitement I had at the start of 2014. I started publishing posts every single day, posted an ambitious editorial schedule, purchased fun new photography back-drops to work with an declared my intention to touch each item on an epic list of projects. This year I learned my lesson, I'm much more sedate about it. I'll plan and share some better routines for staying productive but these are my main resolutions. The theme is rest to level out my hyperactive right-brain!

1. Get outside and explore more often, I rarely did so in 2014. Ride my bike, take walks and hikes, explore abandoned places, garden, go on more photo adventures.

2. Summon spirituality. I'm doing this through practicing feng sui principles. Nothing too drastic, just a little more quiet, mindful time. Even if it's sipping tea and doodling or taking notes.

3. Be Compassionate. Tackle a project bigger than "myself" that helps people.

4. READ! I've nearly stopped reading books, read all the things! I have a giant pile to get to, will most monthly updates.

5. Write/Study. Set aside a couple of days weekly to write, research, and study. I plan to ride the bike to the downtown library to do this, goal double-duty!

Yoga/Meditation "Glass House" at The Hostel in the Forest

That'll do for now! I spent the year building up good eating and exercise habits. My big problem is giving myself time to recharge creative juices so I can work more productively. I will update on my progress. My main focuses business/creativity wise are:

(1) Finishing my master herbalism training, enjoying the hell out of it!
(2) Starting my 100% natural body care line with my mom and boyfriend
(3) Upcycled line (art, clothes)
(4) Reselling, smaller scale, only mid century modern or very unique items
(5) Secret upcoming projects for Thrift Core like eBooks, before/after projects and DIYs. I want Thrift Core to be a big main focus again! I adore creating content, researching, and writing like crazy.

  • Honest update on my epic project list from 2014. Now it's a project list for 2015, totally okay with that!

What are your new years resolutions for 2015? I, of course, have more teaching posts to come. I like to start the year with a weight-loss tips post but wanted to research a little more first this time :)

  1. Happy New Year! I hope you reach all of your goals and more! This year I've given a lot of thought to my goals and they're all really business and blog centric.

    1. Good way to do it! I always lots of blog/biz ones but I think my big ones are getting grounded so I can focus and do everything else better!

  2. Vanessa, it's a pleasure to be introduced to your blog. You seem to give a lot of thoughtfulness to your life. After a very tough year, I need to get grounded, too. I'll come back to explore your blog more!

    1. Thanks for stopping by Sharon! Yep, I'm pensive to a fault. Please do come back and explore more. I'll be sharing lots of indie business, being productive, art, veganism, whole living, spirituality .. :D need to narrow the focus, haha

  3. Those are good, doable goals, Van. Probably better than the massive to-do lists we can often get caught up in (and then abandon in despair, ha ha!!).

My goals are fairly simple this year, as well. I have one ultra-specific goal---do a Project 365 (where you take a photo a day). Then, finish organizing my space (that was my goal last year---got it about halfway done) and jettisoning the rest of the clutter. Oh, and hoist the freak flag even more proudly this year :)

    1. Yes to the freak flag, me too! Last year my list was ridiculous, I did touch every thing on it, but now I know it's better to break it down. Seasonal goals, more like it :P

I think I'll try and share project 365 and other photo challenges this year, too. Can't wait! I do take tons of photos daily for blog posts, product photography for myself and clients, and just because I like to document life, but It'll be fun to stretch the creativity with specific assignments.

  4. All these goals are possible, cant wait to know more about your natural products project =) and yeahhh explore, life is more fun! My goals next year are to get new skills to help me improve my blog like courses of photography, photoshop and video. Also wanna attend some gastronomy school, sick of cooking same dishes. Will try some of your vegan recipes ;)

  5. Excellent goals you've set for yourself there, ma'am! I hope you succeed in every single one. :) Most of my goals do "double duty" too - like, my main goal is exploring more & expanding my knowledge of the world, so there area bunch of mini goals like being fit enough to explore and reading more genres etc. I'm excited to make good on them all!

    1. Yep mine are compounded that way too. Love that I'm seeing a lot of "Research/explore" resolutions from others. Since I'm miraculously gyming regularly there was no need to make that a resolution, I'll just keep uping the weight and torturing myself harder :P But exploring outside regularly will add more exercise to the mix, too.

  6. Great goals, Van! So far, I'm just trying to get back to exercising regularly. I fell off the wagon through the holidays :) After I get through all this tax stuff, I want to sit down and think about other goals for the new year.

    1. Ooh the tax stuff, I nearly forgot on my own, 'til other friends pointed it out :P That and signing up for insurance booo. Good luck getting back on track this year.

  9. I got an early start on my goal which was to belly dance more and lose weight. I started a couple months ago. I'm only down 5/90 lbs but slow and steady wins the race!

    1. Yep, you gotta go slow or it just comes back. Exercise without extreme calorie restriction is the way to do it! I want to try belly dance classes too but for now am continuing to let my boyfriend be his training guinea pig. I've made a LOT of progress in the past few months but I'm still very weak. Long way to go! Maybe I'll do my first push and pull ups this year.

    1. Thank you :D I'll keep people updated along the way. So much to do it's hard to focus and figure out where to start but I'm working on it.
