IKEA Hack DIY / MODify: Easy Roller Blind Professional Photo Backdrop Set-Up

I consigned myself to paying well over $100 for "professional" photo backdrops when my mom suggested something that should have been obvious- why not use roller blinds/shades instead? We bought the two above while in Orlando's IKEA to retrieve my merchandise storing expedit unit and I love using them.

I pull them down when they're needed, then they go back up and out of the way when I'm done. As I've said before inspiration strikes at random and I needed fast access to my backdrops so I could get to work before the creative spark fizzles out.

There is a slight texture that can be smoothed on the white background by adjusting levels in Adobe Photoshop Elements and I need a ladder to access the gray backdrop but it's still much better than bringing out and setting backdrops, a stand and clips every time I need to take a photo. (Or taping poster board/pinning fabric to the wall as I was doing.) And it's cheap. Win/win! (Here's an inexpensive white roller blind you can order to get you started.)

White and Gray Photo Backdrops, Clips and Stands Online: $124.98+
Roller Blinds from IKEA: $30.00
Easy Use, Tidy Photo Station: Priceless

Past MODifies: Art Hanging / Record/Magazine Display / Fabric Photo Station

    1. Mom was clever with that one. So glad I went with this over the alternative.

  2. I am so doing that! I have grey photo paper that I love, but size is limited. Thanks for the tip!

    1. No prob, definitely beats photo paper that gets wrinkled and dirty easily.

    1. A lot of fellow etsy sellers use white walls, looks good! I'd opt for the same if I had them but mine are a yellowey beige and very textured, doesn't work in product photos for me.

  4. That is a great idea! By the way, we have that basket and several of the yellow lustroware canisters. Love the way you captured their beauty! (Rob)

    1. These go all the way to the floor almost, love that I can stand in front on them for photoshoots as well for clothing, accessories, or to illustrate scale on large items.

  7. My brother is a vinyl records collector/dealer, and he recommends the Expedit for record storage! I know you don't have much vinyl, but he actually has multiple Expedit units on casters so he can move them around and have layers of storage against a wall, sort of like library stacks but for records, and in a small space (studio apartment in NYC). Not quite a hack, but a bit of useful info.

    1. I wanted to be casters on mine, too, but drag it around with a big blanket under it instead, ha! Works for now. Definitely a big help for storage and was worth driving eight hours for. Wish we had an IKEA here...

  8. That is such a cool idea! Never heard anyone using window roller blinds for photo backdrops. It seems so obvious; why didn't I think of that? I especially love how convenient they are to use. Great idea to share with other online sellers. Thanks for sharing :0)

    1. No prob, I absolutely love using these. Another OBVIOUS help someone just e-mailed me is attaching a drape pull so I don't have to hassle with a ladder. I'm questioning my problem-solving skills more and more...

  10. WOW! What a fantastic idea. I've been working on getting my Etsy store up and running and was trying to find something that would work in my small workroom. I REFUSE to pay the price for a professional set-up. The Habitat for Humanity near me always has those roller blinds... thanks for sharing the idea!!!

  11. this might be perfect for me! i am about to start an intense catalog of my board game collection and want the photos as uniform as possible. do you only take photos on the top of that shelving unit? some of the photos look like they have a larger depth than that..

    1. I haven't listed anything on Etsy that has been too big to not fit on top of the expedit unit, it's fairly wide on top.
