What's in a Busy Bohemian Nerd's Bag: Four Bags for Four Adventures + Kawaii Crap

I love posts where I can peek into creative people's art, photography, travel, and casual bags. I've been documenting what I carry with me throughout the week. I've got a minimalist approach these days and love packing light wherever I go; very liberating:

Everyone enjoys the gun bag! I get a lot of comments from guys on it, in particular. These are my usual suspects: Phone, wallet (by the amazing Poketo, found it brand new at the flea market), favorite sunnies, change case with a kokeshi doll featured and my little notebook for numbers and ideas. I have to carry my passport with me because I lost my driver's license. I need to look into that...

When I know I'm going to be shooting I stuff necessities into my utilitarian camera bag. It was thrifted. I like its simplicity. Blue collar, if you will. It holds my Canon EOS Rebel T1i with Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens. I bring my Tamron 12-250mm Macro lens in case I need a wider zoom but usually stick to 50mm lens. I was on the way to Southern Crossing Antique Mall to price some merchandise so you can see my price tags here.

I bought this Makona backpack purse from one of the funnest comic and anime conventions I've ever attended! Makona is a character from the popular Japanese comic book XXXholic. A lot of people think it's a cyclops-bunny but he has closed eyes and a blue gem in the middle of his forehead. I use it exclusively for biking and it's pictured with my bike lock, wallet, keys and bungie cord. I took this photo before I biked to the antique mall to pick up a train case that sold from my Etsy shop. I used the bungie to secure it to the back of my bike. I also picked up some baking soda from the Walgreens nearby to make some more toothpaste.

I like to pretend people are less likely to throttle me with their vehicle with this large rabbit-thing on my back to catch attention. Can't say you didn't see me, it's like wearing a big stuffed animal.

I have a couple of these kawaii Asian Motif shopping bags by Blue Q. I take them with me to my kitchen shifts at Shakti Life Kitchen (and in my car for flea markets/grocery shopping) so I can stuff my bag full of veggies when the shift's up. I wear my Batman hat to keep my locks out of the food and love drinking Kombucha on-the-go, I get a discount on them at the kitchen. My green maneki neko apron's (of course my apron is Japanese with cats on it!)  is usually in the bag but I neglected to get it in the shot.

Edit, Bonus:

I found these photos from January while going through photos. This is what was in my bag on a busy work day. This was before my mini-composition books made my bag a lot lighter!

I packed toiletries because I went straight from running errands to a sleep-over. I love using my little Transformers zip-bags when my purse is full to keep things organized and clean.

What to you keep in your bag these days? I'm thinking of including my toothbrush, floss and toothpaste for use after every meal like the crazy pedantic nut I am. I miss packing art, beach and garden bags, too. Those are next when I finally let myself have some fun!

  2. I wish I could carry as little as you do! Good for you! My purse is ridiculous. I have my phone, which is the Galaxy note and it is huuuggggeee! I have my sons epipens (he is allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, all legumes, lentils, peas.....) I always carry a selection of Sharpie markers, because my son always wants one to draw on things, such as watermelons at the grocery store. And I like to have sharpies because sometimes I like to do a little graffiti (yes, I admit it.) Then I have my ten thousand rewards cards and punch cards and loyalty cards. Lollipops for my daughter. Sunglasses...ponytail holders.....money, bank cards, coins rattling around the bottom....gum. Gum wrappers....OMG what is wrong with me!?

    1. Haha, I miss gum! I used to chew lots of Dentine Ice but now I'm trying to brush more instead. I read gum gives you gas? It's silly, I'm being pedantic there :) It helps more than it causes harm. With kids I imagine it would be a lot harder to keep things neat. I did a lot of graffiti when I was in High School, but don't anymore. For now! :D

  4. I've gotta get in the habit of keeping a notebooks in my bags. I frequently have ideas when I'm out and about and then, because I don't write them down, they drift away by the end of the day...I like the mini composition book.

I also keep a multipurpose Leatherman tool in my bag because you never know when you are going to need a little screwdriver or a mini scissors or a tiny saw ;)

    1. I used to keep a tape measure but I haven't thrifted in a few weeks, haven't needed it. I used to keep a big full composition book but like the little ones better now :D

  5. Just an idea for those of us who have losts of things in our bags...little bags in your bag. I have a zippered bag with lip balm, aspirin, tooth picks, etc. another zippered bags for pens, notebook, tape measure, magnifying glass (serious thrifter!) and another bag for phone, checkbook, wallet, etc. This way, even though there is a lot of stuff, it is somewhat organized. Plus, when I find a cute little bag, it has a purpose.

    1. I used to do that with my work-bag: http://www.thriftcore.com/2011/03/whats-in-this-thrifters-bag.html

I still have the same transformers zip-bags. I was going to include a what's-in-my-bag shot from January of my bag before a sleep-over with the zip-bags in use with toiletries but opted against it since I don't carry that much anymore. Maybe I'll slip it in. :D Little bags are fun.

    2. i need a little bag in my bag too - for the same kind of small essentials that just tend to knock around for ages in there loose (and tend to get dirty and ruined by the time i need to use them...) i'm planning to sew a zippy bag out of candy wrappers soon, hope it will be the solution i need :) otherwise i have the usual phone-keys-money combo in my trusty shoulder bag, plus the tapemeasure for those spontaneous thrifty finds for the home!

    3. I stopped carrying the tape measure since I stopped thrifting but it may be making a come back soon. I'm attempting to get back out today but it may be a bad idea being sick & all...

  7. Cute purses! Since I have kids, my purse is filled with stuff like hair ties, band aids, and hand sanitizer. There are also lots of crumbs at the bottom :)

    1. Haha, when I was busier there were crumbs and craft supplies all tangled up in my purse because I'd work on art stuff wherever I went! I've let it all go, can't do it all :D Not required to craft every spare second. I should pack my gameboy or a book for the rare bank visit though.
